Assuming that these two were the grandmother and great grandmother of this little boy it makes me wonder how they treated the boy's mother (or father?) growing up. This is an example of the tragic pattern of abuse and if it is not stopped it is very likely that this boy will grow up to treat his own kids the same way.
This is so sad! :(

What is it about the doctor's office?! (Reply to this comment)
by willeftk
I had a similar experience that I won't ever forget. At our pediatrician's office there was a grandma who would not let a boy of about 3 out of the chair. Mind you, there were toys and children all over the room and she kept snarling at him to sit still. The boy was exceptional given his age and the distractions in the room. When the mother came out with his younger sibling, the grandmother told her how bad the boy had been. The mother growled something at the boy and he began to cry and he said over and over, "I don't want a belt whipping!"
I did the same as you and tried to talk to the nurses about it as I tried hard to maintain my composure. There was nothing anyone could do, apparently. I was afraid that if I said something to the mother, she would take it out on her young son.
Thanks for sharing your story. It might help another frustrated parent remember how others perceive us. Even if these are idle threats, they should never be spoken to anyone. An adult who threatens another adult can be arrested. It's a shame the way society treats children.
Stepping off my soapbox,

Interesting story, but... (Reply to this comment)

...I'm not really sure how this is helpful in building a child's self esteem. Sound more just like someone sharing a 'shocking' story of abuse and the adults who do nothing about it.
Peace,

How sad (Reply to this comment)

this happens more than you know. It makes my heart ache. I would have just asked the women for her name and made up an excuse and turned her in. I have done it before. Children are our future. thank you for sharing. BJ

How Terrible (Reply to this comment)

That is so sad....I sure feel sorry for that precious child. Hopefully those ladies are not his guardians and the parents will realize how they treat him and stop it. One can hope?? You are right though, this behavior is very saddening.

The receptionist was wrong... (Reply to this comment)

...she should have been on the phone to Child Protective Services, or whatever the equivalent is in your state. The child was being abused physically and emotionally.
Thanks for writing this article, and for bringing attention to the problem of verbal abuse. You are absolutely right, all human beings deserve to be treated with respect.

Get their license plate Number ! (Reply to this comment)
by zipworth
What was being done to that little boy in that doctor's office was child abuse. They were abusing that child emotionally, verbally, and physically. Here in Canada, we are required by law to report anything of that nature to the police or Children's Aid. They almost always investigate any claims made on a child. Surely there are similar laws in the U.S.? I have reported people to the police by copying down their license plate number. No child should be treated that way, ever.
