Very well done (Reply to this comment)

You've made some excellent selections and I'm eager to follow your guidance to movies you mention that I haven't seen yet. Thank you.
By the way, Detour has not been reviewed on Epinions yet. I'm not trying to nag you or assign you more work but it does seem you'd be the perfect person to review it.

Gee, but those Raymond Chandler movies were great! I like to think of Michael Connelly's work (Concrete Blonde) or Dennis Lehane (Sacred) as being worthy modern (written) noir, and older (celluloid) stuff Black Dalhia and Mitchum's version of Cape Fear seem to have most of the elements you mention.
But it is your list Howard, and I salute your fine pics as well as your clear and concise explanation of what constitutes this hard-bitten genre!
Many thanks,
Dollface, er, I mean Casey

Re: I'd+place... (Reply to this comment)
by Howard_Creech
Thanks for your rating and comment. As to placement, I tried to make it as comprehensive as I could. The two films you mention could easily have been placed in the top ten, "The ten movies listed below are the cream of the Film Noir crop. The runners-up could easily be in the first ten and are every bit the equals of my ten personal favorites." As for "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" it contains all the elements of classic film noir, except for the devious dame. Film history was one of my favorite subjects in college, and my favorite instructor
(noted film historian & author Scott Hammen) felt that every movie director John Huston (generally accepted as the creator of first film noir) ever made was Film Noir, I am inclined to agree. The other movies you mention are excellent examples of the genre, however I had to stop somewhere, since my top ten list had already grown to 25. Howard

Where is my favorite film of all time, Dr. Strangelove???
Oh man, I gotta go rent Pulp Fiction, so I can relive my late childhood (even though it's in color).
Great review.

Kiss Me Deadly and Touch of Evil higher on my list than you.
I'm also very fond of Scarlett Street and The Big Clock.
Does Treasure of the Siera Madre even qualify as "film noir"? I dunno...
People have really stretched what is and isn't film noir in my opinion. I saw a definitive list once and it really wasn't all that long.

What a great review, Howard! You taught me
aspects of film noir of which I was unaware.
Thank you so much.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've seen the film and it's a good one. I just couldn't include any more films (my list had already grown to 25) I could easily have doubled the number of films listed, so maybe I should have made it two reviews? Thanks again for reading and commenting. Howard

"The Usual Suspects" is a fine film, and I considered it, however, since my top ten list had already grown to 25 (top ten, runners-up, and NEO noir) I thought I had better finish this thing before it got completely out of hand. Thanks

under Neo Noir. What about "Dead Again" with Kenneth Branagh? That was not only an excellent movie but it took a contemporary spin on Classic Noir.

What a great list of noir films! (Reply to this comment)
by webguy
I'm not sure I've seen all these, so I'll have to head down to the rental shop and check it out.
Ever seen "Usual Suspects"? It's not a true noir movie, but it has many of the noir elements that I find entertaining...a film that I'd highly recommend.

...for actually explaining what is meant by 'film noir'. While I could guess at the general idea, as a non-moviegoer I couldn't have defined it or given an example of the genre if my next beer depended upon it. I stand educated, with thanks.

Alas, we have only 2 of these films in our collection. Well, 4, if we include "Chinatown" and "The Late Show".
An authoritative reference work.
