Your Computer Is Only As Good As The Merchant You Buy It From!

You are not just buying a computer, but the service and support of the store you purchased it from.

Small mom and pop stores, or even your Local Computer Geek (tm) will give you better service, provided they are established.

Often times, even after the warentee is expired, they will gladly help for free. The only exception is, of course, you need a part replaced. Even so, they work on peanuts. (Sometimes literally! I know cuz I'm one of those geeks, and one of my "customers" offered nuts to me when I rejected payment).

It all depends on your geek. :)

Customer service seems to be a joke these days.
Extended warranties are rarely worth the paper they are written on.
Customer service is going to be the difference in 2000 and beyond, most places chage the same prices it all comes down to service.

The best bet for computers is to build your own or buy from a local PC shop.
Then you can service it or get the the people that built it to help you.
They repair these things every day and can normally get you up and running in no time :)

why Apple is considering pulling out of CompUSA. My mother bought an IBM laptop from them and had an issue with the cd rom. After days of arguing with them, she called IBM, got a case number and had the machine fixed. She was sure to call the manager at CompUSA and give him some lip afterward. CompUSA wanted to charge her. IBM told her it was free. Interesting????

It is pretty sad... (Reply to this comment)

A lot of places just suck when it comes to customer service. After having problems a few years back I now keep all the original packaging and all my receipts, warranties and manuals in a folder.

Last year I bought a DVD-ROM and then later on a CD-Burner from Future Shop, and both had been opened and had a sticker on it saying it was checked and was ok; still I play skeptical to the sticker and I told them to either give me a discount or free warranty - they gave me a free three year warranty on both items.

Which helped, cause I recently returned my DVD-ROM as I was having an odd problem with the decoder board. They gave me the newest model, no questions asked other than the simple statement I gave saying it's not working properly. They also gave me back the difference, as the newer model was cheaper than the one I bought last year! So that was sweet.

Keeping the boxes also helps as if you ever want to resell it, last week I took some older stuff into a store that buys, sells and trades older computer equipment and they tested it and said they would give me $200 for it.

But I've found it really does help to keep everything - it makes it easier if you ever have to return it or even resell it.

Don't quote me on this. I remember having read that CompUSA was bought by a Mexican multimillionaire. Why is there a lack of customer service? Should be able to pay the bills and hire good employees! don't you think?
