Cons: I access the stuff I just put on the CDs I just burned
The Bottom Line: If you have a B.S. in electrical or computer engineering, this is the product for you.

| stellamaria's Full Review: Verbatim 52X24X52 EXT USB 2.0 (VBT522452X) Burner |
I bought the Verbatim External CD-RW 52x24x52 because I had no big fat server at home to back up my 32GB laptop which my husband and I both use. Frankly, I've been unemployed for the last, gulp and ugh, 2 years and I needed an inexpensive way to back up our work. Since the CDs hold about 750 MB a piece, I knew I could back up the real work on about 4 of them and just say good bye to my music collection (most of which is out of my library because my stereo died during my unemployment -- and they say lightening doesn't strike twice). But back to the product,
I'm decently computer savvy with software and a very few hardware issues. That being said, take this review with a quarry of salt. I purchased it at Best Buy about 3 months ago.
The Verbatim DataLifePlus CD-R/RW Drive Specifications are as follows (and this is directly from the box):
It is an external USB 2.0, 2MB Data Buffer
Writing: 52x (7800 KB/sec)
Rewriting: 24x (3600 KB/sec)
Reading: 52x (7800 KB/sec)
Disc-at-Once, Track-at-Once
Session-at-Once, Packet Writing
CD-DA, CD ROM Mode-1, CD-ROM/XA Mode 2 Form-1 and Form-2,
CD-1 Ready, Video-CD (MPEG-1), Photo-CD, Enhanced CD, CD extra, I-Trax CD, UDF, and CD-Text. 120ms Typical.
It also comes with Nero burning software, a windows based software that has a wizard to walk the user through buring audio or data CDs. Interestingly enough, the Nero wizard has an option for multiple session burns. Very easy to use. There is a section for making your own CD covers.
The minimum system requirements for the Verbatim External CD-RW 52x24x52 are as follows:
Operating System: Windows Me/2000 Professional or XP
Processor: IBM Compatible Pentium III/450 Mhz MMX
RAM: 64 MB or higher
HDD with access time of 15ms or less
75 MB free disk space for recording software
700 MB free disk space for recording.
Available USB 2.0 port.
There is a user manual included along with the Nero software installation disk. Mero is okay. And they have included a blank CD, presumably to ensure the success of your virgin burn. Mine was painful and bloody, and I'm having a terrible time accessing the memories of it, which is why this is more a cry for help than a review.
My Processor: IBM Pentium III/850Mhz MMX
My real ram: 128 MG
My desired ram: 256
Initial hard drive space: 32GB
Current Hard drive space: 21GB (guess who likes music)
And, yes, I have a very available USB 2.0 port, although my mouse gets jealous.
I have burned about 10 cds on the Verbatim, disengaged the Verbatim unit, and placed the "new" cds in my cd-rom on my computer. My computer won't recognized that anything is in the "d" drive anymore. Then I remove the cd player through the Hardware manager and add the Verbatim Unit to see if I can read it that way. The same thing happens. I use the search function from the Start menu and my dear sweet computer does not recognize my "e" drive or its contents. I run Win2000 Pro and am the Administrator on the machine. Help! This product can't be this hard to use. I know I have the IQ of at least room temperature in degrees Farenheit.
