Domestic front loader washing machines are small and water efficient - designed for places with limited space.

My machine in England will only take just under half what my mum's top loader in the US will take. And the machines here have a safety mechanism that locks the door, so you can't open it until there is no water in it.

Thanks for the comments!!

BTW, yes front loads are smaller, but you can fit far more laundry in it. Our new frontload can easily wash the same amount of laundry as the much bigger top-load we got rid of. No problem at all.

You sure can open it to put your socks in (Reply to this comment)

I have a Sears Kenmore front-load and you sure can open it to put socks in. All you have to do is push the button in to stop operation of the machine, and then give it a few seconds to settle. If the water level is below the bottom of the door - which it almost always is on mine - you can just open it up, toss in your socks or anything else you forgot, then close it and pull the button back out to start it again.

The only problem I have found with frontloads is that when washing diapers you do not have the option of just dumping the diaper pail into the washer. You have to pick out each diaper and toss it in. But for me that's a very minor annoyance.

Thanks for the advise - I guess I'm just so used to using these things now, that I don't give it any thought! It's the SIZE that gets to me, though! I don't know how many people want more info about my laundry habits though!! :)

Cheers,
Kate

would be very helpful if you could give us more information - a personal experience in detail, etc. and more practical data about front loaders... you get the idea. Anyway, this is just a helpful tip to a beginner... with all my best wishes for your future epinions - Gina
