Have you noticed that lettuce and leafy greens simply do not last in your refrigerator keeping them in their plastic bag from the store even using the veggie bin of your refrigerator? So did I and I had enough of wasting my money on limpy browning lettuce.
Lettuce and leafy greens simply are not inexpensive items any longer, at least in the grocery stores in the Pacific Northwest. Just a couple of years ago, you could buy leafy green lettuce for .59 a bunch and a head of lettuce for .39 a pound. Well the prices now are 1.09 a pound for a head of plain lettuce and 1.29 a bunch for the leafy lettuce.
These prices are too much to let them wilt away while they are waiting for you to use them.
I came across the Rubbermaid 1.4 Gallon Salad Keeper Model 3056 and grabbed two of them as fast as I saw them.
Features
1.4 gallon size (large enough without squashing)
center press lid seal that snaps on
lift tab to open
easily stores in my veggie drawer of fridge
nests in storage to save space
clear see-thru plastic with almond color lid
dishwasher safe
microwave safe
Uses For It
Besides being able to use it to store your lettuce or leafy green veggies, any food can be stored in this and both of mine are in use 99% of the time.
I have stored all types of salads, soups, chili, stews and have even used it for dry storage of noodles and cereal.
The Salad Test
I have found that I can buy a head of lettuce and after properly rinsing and drying it, I can store the lettuce in this container inside my veggie drawer and it will keep my lettuce crisp and not limpy or browning for 2 weeks.
Tossed salads, without the addition of moisture from tomatoes, last 3-4 days. Homemade potato and macaroni salads stay fresh for a good 5 days.
Taking Care of It
Some foods can stain this such as tomato based products if you place it in the container while hot or try to heat it in the container in the microwave. To keep from staining, let the tomato based product cool first and do not heat the tomato based product in the microwave.
The container and lid are both dishwasher safe but for top rack only.
I have already experienced what happens to the lids when the kids accidentally put them on the bottom and they start to crack or get warped by the heat.
Comparison with Tupperware
I own both Tupperware and Rubbermaid products. As everyone knows, Rubbermaid is far less expensive than Tupperware and even though Tupperware might be a bit sturdier than Rubbermaid, Tupperware is not unbreakable since I have quite a few cracked and warped lids.
I have found that Tupperware, even with its tight seal, does not keep foods fresher any longer than the Rubbermaid, so one might as well save the money for the price difference and buy the Rubbermaid product instead.
I am sure you will be very pleased with this product for its size with many uses.
