Disappointed twice but still some positives.

Pros:Beautiful beach, great atmosphere, convenient location.
Cons:Staff can tend to be snooty or disorganized. Facilities not always maintained well.
The Bottom Line: So much potential but they are missing it in the "little things" and a few NOT so little things. At one time I would have highly recommended it.

We have stayed at "The Don" twice now. I know many people love it. It has quaint historic charm and is in a great area. We stayed there at a reduced rate each time and that takes some of the bite out of our negative experiences.

The first time, there was an event going at the beachside restaurant with part of it sectioned off. However, the party had a LOUD band and we could hardly have any conversation over dinner. The service was slow and decidedly rude. We ran up a large tab with 8 people, but I have had far better service from the waitstaff at Dennys.
When we pointed this out later to the manager, she apologized and took some trivial amount off our bill.

The next day we went for coffee at the restaurant and were told that we could not have coffee, and we would have to go into the bar for coffee. The bar was closed and the bartender told us it would be OK to have just coffee in the restaurant since there were dozens of empty tables.

We sat again for coffee but were ejected by the restauarant staff! Incredibly RUDE to paying guests! Be warned some employees are extremely snooty and inconsiderate here.

The second time we stayed there, the pool was CLOSED at the suites facility down the street where we stayed. I could not believe it. Part of what they advertise IS that they have a pool and shuffleboard etc. On the last day of our stay the pool re-opened. However, my wife caught a FUNGAL infection from the pool that has necessitated many weeks of medical treatment.

We will not be returning to the Don Cesar even though we think it is a charming place with a lot of potential if
it were run by people who had some idea of how to do customer service properly.

Your experience may vary from ours I expect, but two stays were enough for me. I have stayed at a similar place called the Diamond Head Resort at Ft. Myers Beach, and I definately recommend it over this place.
