| tommy_lop's Full Review: Mega Man 2 for Game Boy |
I found this at a local K-mart a couple of years ago in the used section so I decided to pick it up since I was on a road trip. I popped it into my then new Gameboy Color and decided to play it. While it's not the best Mega Man game I have ever played, considering that it's the usual two half ports to make a full game that classic mega man gamboy games are this one isnt bad.
Story.
Ok I didnt know what the game story is but according to the epinions detail thing supposedly Mega Man has chased Dr. Wily into the far future and is trying to stop him. This doesnt make sense to me since all the stages are of PAST Mega Man games. Oh well story really doesnt matter in classic Mega Man games all you have to know is Dr. Wily is up to no good, and Mega Man has to blow stuff up it's has easy has that.
Graphics.
The graphics are actually better then I expected considering that the game is so old. There almost up to par with the NES games graphics. Which is kind of good because the original NES games sprites where all small so if Capcom had trouble porting them to a small screen it would be kind of pathetic if they had trouble porting them to the Gameboy. Still there are some screens where the space is notably more cramp then on it's NES predecessors, especially during boss fights and vertical screens. Has far has slow down and flashing it did occur occasionally on the Super Gameboy but not enough to really complain about it.
Sound.
While Mega Man music always does fit it's anime shooter action thingy. it does a good job of it here despite the beepy Gameboy music. While the music isnt anything I would like to listen to when I am not playing, it's not a game where I want to hit the mute either. Besides that all the other classic mega man sound effects including the 8-bit shooting and explosion shots are done pretty good to.
Gameplay.
Ok first off Mega Man 2 for the gameboy is 2 half ports to form one game. We have 45% Mega Man 2, 45% of Mega Man 3, and the last 10% goes to an original last stage. The game starts off with the typical stage select screen seen in Mega Man games. With 4 enemies of Mega Man 2. We have Wood Man, Clash Man, Metal Man, and Air Man stages to fight to and collect there powers. Once collected you go and use them on another boss to make fighting them easier. After fighting the first 4 you go to Wiley's tower where Mega man encounters Wily and rather shooting the son of a gun when he has a chance he chooses to fall through a trap door and the other 4 stages from Mega Man 3 are open up.
The thing that makes the Mega Man 3 stages a bit harder is that you don't know which of the bosses your going to do since there all hidden behind the teleporters. Anyway's the 4 bosses of Mega Man 3 are. Hard Man, Top Spin Man, Needle Man, and Magnet Man. Same thing goes here except you don't know which stage you go into when you first step on the teleporter so you have to hope your lucky enough to get the right stage. After beating these 4 Mega Man battles a protoman look alike named Quint and get's a pogo stick (don't ask me what this does because I have no clue) before going to the last level.
So is there anything new besides the last stage? Not really except for a few things. Except for a few novel game changes like being able to use the metal blade in Mega Man 3. And being able to use the Rush Jet to jet around in Mega Man 2 stages there's not a lot of things new.
Younger gamers who are use to the newer Mega Man series may be in a shock for how simplistic the game play is to. Basically the key to success is get a power from a boss, find the rgiht boss to use it and beat it get a new power and repeat. There are no battle chips, armor, heart tanks, or red reploids with light sabers here just the simple Mega Man formula.
Final Recommendation
If your into classic Mega Man games and don't have both the 2nd and 3rd game then this is worth a pick up.
