Big Fat Wow CentersMar 13 '01 (Updated Aug 05 '01) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line I wouldn't recommend Big Fat Wow. Big Fat Wow Centers are supposed to be Free high-speed internet access posts that are located in shopping malls across the country. They are Free, however not blazing fast as the computers advertise. They advertise "chat," on their screen savers, however, all the chat programs have been blocked. For a T-1 connection, these computers are extremely slow, I've seen dial-up open pages faster. The computers lock up constantly, and 75% of the web pages "cannot be displayed," If the computer server was even on line. 85% of the time I was walking around telling customers, "sorry our server is down," please try back later. I am a former location manager for a Massachusetts center. Working for Big Fat Wow has been nothing but a headache from day one. I started out as part-time assistant and left as a full-time Sr. Promoter. The Regional Manager was about useless, She became my regional manager in March of this year, I didn't meet her until July, 4 months and she only visited my Kiosk one time. She hardly ever responded to my emails, and when she did, it was usually 3 days later and didn't pertain to my message. Sometimes she would even send me email that I didn't understand, then I would respond to her email, and ask for clarification, and her response would be, "Oh that doesn't pertain to your center." So why was I receiving the email? She was totally unprofessional, in my book. She would never return my call when I left a message. Most of the contact phone numbers she gave me were to a cell phone that either required you to leave a mail box number, which I didn't have or was Temporarily not in service. She would send me files to open and print, well the computers are set with a high security setting, set so that no one could open any files, and even if you could, the kiosk is not equipped with a printer, so how would I print these documents? they must assume that all the employees have a personal computer at home, that is online and has a printer. The complaints I could list here on her alone would be to long. Another thing that bothered me is that every person that sits down to read or write Email has no idea that the personnel at the Tech center can read everything on the screen, therefore no one has any privacy on these computers. Even the clients that used the computers annoyed me to no end. There was notices posted on each terminal that clearly stated, "NO FOOD OR DRINKS ALLOWED," and clients would walk up with their McDonald's hamburger in one hand and a soda in the other hand, set the soda down, right next to the keyboard and begin their session, getting grease and food residue caked inside the mouse. I have to ask myself, are these people that ignorant? Would they do this at home on their own computer? One day an obvious pregnant woman and her mate were sitting at the computer, eating potato chips and drinking a beer, I was just about to call security when I noticed they were leaving. Children under the age of 8 are not allowed to use the computers without parental supervision. (notice also posted) Parents would leave there kids at the center and go off shopping! I had one little girl, age 6, sitting there for about an hour, I asked her where her Mommy was, and she said "I don't know," I called security, and he finally found her mother in Ames. She was well behaved, I didn't mind her being there, she wasn't one of the hyper ones that wanted to just bang on the keyboard. I wouldn't recommend working for big fat wow, nor would I recommend use of their computers, unless you don't mind someone reading your personal email. |
