| dj_jazzy_jrod's Full Review: Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided for Windows |
You're ten years old. You are just going to bed, but still excited by the thought of lightsaber duels, and galactic battles. Your eyes start to drift shut, and then they snap back open because you can hear mechanical breathing out in the darkness.
To say there isn't a little boy since 1977 that hasn't dreamt of living in the world of Star Wars, is unimaginable. Now, thanks to Lucas Arts and Sony Entertainment, you can do just that.
Star Wars Galaxies (or SWG for short), will be far and away "the" best online game of the year. Set during the galactic civil war, you play as one of eight different species. They range from your average human, wookie, to even Zabrakian (Darth Maul's species).
Once you pick your species you must pick a profession. You can train to be a scout, marksman, entertainer, artisan, brawler, medic, and so on and so on.
Now, you pick a planet to begin on. You can start on the green and watery planet of Naboo, go to the dry deserts of Tatooine, or one of several other famous Star Wars planets.
So, now you have a character, profession and planet. What do you do now? Quite simply, anything you want. As you play the game and build your character's skills, you are given the choice of becoming a member of the Empire, or one of the rebel forces. The game literally builds an entire life for you. If you kill a thugs, you gain better standing with townsfolk, but kill a police officer, and become one of the masses of intergalactic scoundrels.
The best part,,,,,you can even become a Jedi. That is right my friends. Complete with knowledge of the force and lightsabers, if you can work hard enough and unlock the mysteries of the force, you can unlock the ninth character slot. A character who is "force sensitive". This means you can quest to become a Jedi knight, and eventually master, or if your destiny calls, you can fall to be a dark Jedi.
The options are endless, and the world is complete and stunning. Now, for those pesky technical areas.
Graphics- By far and away the best graphics I have ever seen in a game. The detail and rendering used in the game are awesome. To building towering high above you, to great mountains and canyons you must traverse. This game is a galaxy into itself.
Sound- From the sound of blasters, or incoming storm troopers. The sound is wonderfully done. Complete with musical scores from the movie, you will feel part of Lucas' dream.
Gameplay- Not to be confused with game "function", the game play is outstanding. With exciting confrontations, mystery solving, and the general pleasure of building a great character, this game has endless replay potential. I dare anyone not to want to get "just a little further". It is impossible.
Game Function- Ok, the blackspot on the game's review. Let me first say, I have had the game since it was released. With every day, it plays better than the day before. That being said, Sony rushed the release of the game. It does have bugs that have seriously affected the performance of the game. I still get kicked of the server from time to time. Still, everyday I log in, more patches and updates are downloaded that improve it's performance. In two months, I am confident the game will play seemlessly. Shy of the bugs, the game does have a few other drawbacks. Like sitting through the opening credits everytime you start the game up. You should be able to skip them at some point. Also, if you lose connection to the server, it shuts the game all the way down. It should have a hold mode, while it attempts to reconnect.
All in all, the game is a success. I feel it will be a huge step for online gaming. Another plus, is it is currently only available for pc. So it will be an edge against platform players.
I was definately pleased with Star Wars Galaxies. Well, better run, the game isn't playing itself.
