Quiet Elegance

Written: Feb 25 '01
Pros:quiet, well-decorated, very clean, good breakfast
Cons:across the road from the Ocean, price
The Bottom Line: I recommend this Inn for anyone who wants a quiet stay. The partying crowd should go elsewhere.

My stay at the First Colony Inn was very pleasant. The Inn is a 3-story bed & breakfast that was refurbished and moved to it's current location in 1988. It has 27 rooms, which vary in size, and are filled with antique furniture. The Inn has a marvelous two levels of wrap-around porches that are wonderful for sitting out in the afternoon or night air. The most pleasing thing about my stay was the solitude. The Inn has a very large site, which would be equivalent to at least an empty lot on each side of it. You don't have to worry about hearing the all night businesses or clamor of a busy hotel nearby. On this huge site, exists a courtyard where croquet can be played and a very large swimming pool and surrounding deck for sunbathing.

My room had all of the usual hotel type of amenities such as Television, Thermostat-controlled heat and air conditioning, refrigerator, coffee maker, hair dryer, etc. However, unlike a hotel, it was well-decorated. The only negative I could see about the room was that the bed was very high requiring a step to get onto it. I think that would be a drawback for an older person. Also all of the rooms on the upper-floors must be reached by steps (also a drawback for older individuals). The room was very clean and I have absolutely nothing but compliments on its condition. Although the rooms are beautiful and elegant, they are not exceptionally large or fancy (which you shouldn't expect from a Bed & Breakfast).

Each morning a complimentary continental breakfast is available in the small dining area. The variety of food changed from day to day including bagels, cereal, muffins, sausage, coffee, juice, etc. I understand an afternoon tea was also available in the afternoon, although I never attended. The owners and staff are European (British I believe) and the certainly keep the European spirit. Just hearing the accents was a pleasure. The staff was very friendly and did everything to make our stay pleasurable.

There is a library available on the second floor, in which books and games can played there or taken back to your room for enjoyment. For young children, many rooms can accomodate a crib, and they are available upon request.

The Inn has a good central location to many of the local tourist sites. It is located on US 158 (Virginia Dare Highway) just north of the US 64 intersection. It is a quick jaunt to Manteo or Kitty Hawk from this location, and it's located along a good business strip of shops and restaurants.

The only drawbacks to the Inn were that it is across the street from the beach (although they do have their own access), and the cost. The rooms are not for everyone. The prices range from $75-$170 in the winter to $170-$290 in the summer. Due to my late inquiry, I was forced to stay in one of the smaller rooms because the others were booked. I suggest if you spend this kind of money for a room, get the larger ones. If money is an issue, look elsewhere. Also, book your reservations early.

I definitely enjoyed my stay and would recommend it to those who are looking for a good quiet location to get away.
