Thanks, Angela (and thanks for co-sponsoring the censorship writeoff, BTW)
I've had credit cards since I was eighteen (over thirty years), and I've found myself in over my head a couple of times. I'm glad I was able to get help from my family (some of this common sense advice, not cash) when I needed it most.

Gwenny-
Do whatever it takes to get out of debt without going into bankruptcy. Talk to your creditors; check out the local consumer resources, whatever.
Our nation's financial system is such that a huge multinational company can go "bankrupt" and default on billions of debt, then go out and get a monster loan the next day. But if a consumer goes broke and defaults, he/she is going to have major problems getting credit for several years.
Hope you can get things straightened out.

Dunno, Alex --
The way I learned this stuff was by having the bank drum it into my head with a stick -- an interest stick!
But I hope I can help somebody else avoid the traps I fell into as a young'un.
Thanks for stopping by

Yes, if you're disciplined enough to be able to pay off that card with a rebate, it can pay off. A good trick is to set arrange an EFT to pay the bill each month from your bank account.
If you're not disciplined enough, though, one month's payment late can come close to wiping out any benefits. We, too, have a card with a 1% rebate; which we used to the tune of $8500 last year (a whopping $85 in rebates). Prior to setting up an EFT, though, we lost the bill one month and the interest charges and fees added up to around $50. Our rebate turned into $35 overnight!
This is a idea for which good self-discipline is absolutely necessary, otherwise you can end up pouring 18 to 24% interest into someone else's pockets in hopes of getting a 1% return.
Always glad to hear from you Claudia; I gather the Australia trip was a blast!

...however I do charge EVERYTHING on my 1% cash back credit card, then pay it off in full. It work for me and the way I look at it, every penny counts - towards another vacation!
I enjoy reading your reviews.
