The Bottom Line: The best way of adding USB ports, and I tell ya' it's really great to find something that works exactly as specified with no frills or problems.
kevmalone's Full Review: Targus Mobile MiniHub (PA060U) Networking Hub
Comes with: Hub, AC adapter, installation instructions.
My hardware: Dell Desktop, Pentium II, Windows 98, 2 USB ports on board.
Using the hub to drive: Scanner, printer, digital cameras.
Been using for: 15 months
Comments: My Dell came with 2 USB ports, 1 is used for the sound system, leaving 1 for my scanner. When my HP printer died on me, I decided to upgrade to USB from parallel, so I needed a hub.
I tried several hubs from different manufacturers (Belkin, Linksys), but had various problems (Windows couldn't "see" devices, couldn't reboot because the hub was still 'live' etc.) and had pretty much given up on upgrading my printer, I started looking at older parallel models.
While in my local PC store the salesperson recommended I try this, although it is targeted at laptops and I associated Targus with luggage for some reason.
It took 10 minutes to install - Windows recognized it straight away and installed using drivers from its own database - exactly as the (very clear) instructions said.
I decided I wanted the ports to be on my desk, so I used double-sided Velcro to attach the hub to my monitor (the USB cable supplied is only about 12" but I added a USB extension) and it works great: like having a break-out box!
I can now sit and my desk and plug in cameras etc. while the scanner and my new scanner/copier/printer combo machine (ahem!) are still attached.
I have had zero problems with this in the past 15 months, and haven't had to give it a single thought. In fact it was only when I came across the install instruction manual that I realized that I hadn't posted a review.
I have been using PCs for 15+ years and this is by far the easiest hardware addition I have ever done.
