| dandino's Full Review: WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos |
I left work early the day this was released so I could be sure to get a copy before they sold out. This flew off the shelves, and for good reason.
Like the previous two Warcraft titles, including Starcraft, this is a strategy fighting game. You are in command of the armies of 1 of 4 different races. It is up to you to build your town, train your warriors, expand your resources, and defeat your enemies. Each race is completely different with an array of characters from simple ax wielding grunts to dwarfs that ride flying gryphons raining down lightning hammers.
The biggest addition to this installment of the Craft series are the heros, an option obviously taken from Blizzard's other fantastic series, Diablo. Each race has 3 heros to choose from that gain in power as they gain experience. They are able to pick up unique items to enhance their abilities, learn new skills, and hire people to help you fight.
For single player, the campaigns are very entertaining. You find yourself engrossed in the story and want to beat the next board simply to see what happens next. This is rare in most video games for me, but Blizzard does and excellent job making you care about the game you play.
The free online gaming is this title's largest strength. 1v1 to 4v4, and special custom maps are just the beginning. Battle.net is Blizzard's greatest asset. This is what keeps you playing the game for years. Yes, I said YEARS. Every game is different because everyone has different strategies. This is what keeps the game fresh. Get internet access, you will enjoy yourself immensely.
For those of you who do enjoy this, also get the expansion pack (Frozen Throne), more characters, more quests, more items, more heros, more fun. Well worth the money.
As far a system requirements go, check the Blizzard web site for the exact numbers (www.blizzard.com). A PIII 500MHz will run it, but it will do it slowly. And a decent video card is required as well. This game will also eat whatever RAM you have.
No Blizzard game has ever been a disappointment, this is a fantastic game.
Note, this is a simulated war game which includes blood. Custom maps are made online and playable by everyone that may have content not suitable for young children. If it were a movie, it would be PG-13.
