| jdblasco's Full Review: Sony Ericsson P800 GSM / EGSM Cellular Phone |
I've been waiting for this phone for about 9 months, the pre-release hype was too drawn out. Managed to get one in Mineral Gray color from GSMphonesource.com about 2 months ago. The phone came with the R2D firmware, this is currently the latest version in North America. This has been a terrific purchase for me, it replaced a Nokia tri-band phone and an HP Jornada PDA.
The strengths of the P800 are many. As a phone, it can contain a huge amount of contact info (12 Mb internal memory), has excellent reception, and has full voice dial/voice command capability. While not the smallest phone around by far, you can leave it in a jacket, purse or briefcase and use a bluetooth headset, most of which are smaller than any phone. As a tri-band GSM, you can use it in over 100 countries as well.
As a PDA, you will find the handwriting recognition to be excellent, as well as the synchronization compatibility with MS Outlook. I have used the Palm and Pocket PC operating systems, and I find Symbian to be faster and more efficient in terms of memory. The P800 also plays video and audio files, and has a growing library of games to choose from if that's your thing. Finally, it has a built in camera that is not high resolution but can be handy when you don't have a real one nearby.
In terms of shortcomings, there are two that come to mind. First, the software library for Symbian is not as extensive as it is for the competing operating systems. In my case, I would like to be able to modify files from MS Office, at least Word and Excel. Currently, I can only view these files, so I can't replace my laptop with the P800.
The second flaw for me is the Bluetooth reception. While I can hear the other party on the phone just fine, there are conditions when they cannot hear me. Hopefully this is can be addressed with a future firmware upgrade.
I will add that in order to maximize the usefulness of this device, you MUST read the instruction manual. If you don't you may find the phone complex and confusing to use.
