The Bottom Line To encourage children to learn to use the computer, I highly recommend the purchase of a high quality children's character mouse.

Let’s face it, I’m getting old! (grin)

When I was going to school, there wasn’t anything such as a VCR, a personal computer, a cell phone or anything like that. Now we are so swamped by technological conveniences that it defies a descriptive word.

Because our children are going to have to develop into a more technological society, I have tried my best to incorporate technology into my children’s lives at an early age.

One of the ways that I did this was to purchase a computer mouse that they felt comfortable with in order to encourage them or entice them to work on a computer at an early age. When I realized that my youngest son was not developing normally speech-wise, I decided to try intensively to get him to interact with the computer in order to communicate instead.

To do this, I purchased a mouse that was user friendly to him – A Buzz Lightyear mouse and mouse pad. Knowing my son’s passion for Toy Story and Buzz Lightyear as well, I figured this would be one of the best ways to capture his attention.

I was right.

After showing him what the mouse would do, he wanted to do play with the computer continuously. I purchased for him were also Toy Story or Disney oriented, this encouraged him to want to learn more about the characters and it became a great means for him to want to increase his learning.

The mouse also increased his fine motor skills as well which were very delayed due to his disability.

Many people may not believe that purchasing a character-oriented mouse is a good idea. That may be the case with many products out there because of poorer quality standards.

However, the Buzz Lightyear mouse that I purchased was a Disney authorized product and was of very high standards. It was a highly adaptable two button microswitch and was PS/S and Serial Integrated. Because my son's computer has a old serial port that we're attaching the mouse to, we have had to use an adapter to attach it to the 9 pin serial port which is also color coordinated and included in the kit.

I had absolutely no problems with his cartoon character mouse interacting not only with my Pentium 533 but also the Pentium 233 and Pentium 75 that I also have in my home.

Our mouse has also been dropped on a hard floor many times and will not break. Well, I suppose if I threw it across the ROOM it would break, but my son is rather rough with the mouse and we’ve had no problems with it all.

Disney has many of these character-oriented mice and pads on their web site. I noticed that there is a Bug’s Life one that is going for about $24.99 but there’s also a Winnie the Pooh combination on sale for $14.99.

In my personal opinion, purchasing a child’s oriented mouse is the most ideal way to introduce a child to the concept of using a personal computer. By purchasing a high quality mouse with a very popular children’s character such as Buzz Lightyear, Mickey Mouse, or other characters, not only do you have a great mouse in itself, but possibly a collector’s item for the future.

In conclusion, purchasing a children’s character mouse is, in my personal opinion, a great investment and I encourage parents of younger children to consider this for their first mouse experience.
