| mtroutma's Full Review: Sony SAT-T60 DIRECTV Receiver with TiVo Service |
I won't waste your time explaining how TiVo has changed our viewing habits and use of TV. I could never go back to regular TV again. The T60 is a DirecTivo unit, now referred to as Direct TV DVR with TiVo. That just means the DVR and satellite receiver are one integrated unit. This makes for excellent functionality.
The TiVo records 30 minutes of Live TV for rewind, pause and playback at any time. You can easily fast forward through ads and boring show content with the >>> button, or hit the secret "select-play-select-30-select" combination to get an instant 30 second skip in place of the advance button. Our unit came with a 30GB drive - good for about 35 hours of video recording. We have found this to be more than enough to store a week of shows and movies. If we wanted more space, a 160GB drive is under $200 and can be added very easily to the unit.
We have almost 60 season passes for a variety of shows. Because of the number of shows involved, working with the season pass can be very time consuming. Every time you modify a show priority for recording overlap (when using two tuners you can record 2 shows at a time while watching a third!) you have to wait 3-4 minutes for TiVo to work out the conflicts.
TiVo suggestions come through your watching habits and the thumbs up/down buttons. Since our early list was mainly Law and Order type shows, we get a ton of suggested crime movies. Overall the suggestions have been moderate in accuracy. I would suggest not having it auto record shows for you based on what it thinks you might like. Just go through and pick through the suggestions on a frequent basis.
Our unit had a number of initial modem problems - it didn't want to download through the wireless 14.4 jack we bought. Through a great deal of research, we bought a high end 56k wireless jack which fixed the problem. It seems the 14.4 would fail every time TiVo upgraded its OS. Funny that doesn't get broadcast down through the high bandwidth satellite channels.....at any rate, we had to manually reboot the TiVo during this period to clear the modem. But it has been stable for over a year now.
In general I will say this is a well manufactured and thought out unit. It is easy to use, moderately fast to react to user input, and a joy to use. It does seem a shame they ship with 30GB drives when 120GB cost about the same. Fortunately upgrades are easy to do.
