Pros: Provides people in rural communities, military bases or missions an opportunity to further education.
Cons: You do not get the variety in classes that You'd receive attending a campus.
The Bottom Line: An ideal way to earn a degree for soldiers, sailors, miners in Alaska and cowboys with laptops in Montana.

| mcmaster's Full Review: American Military University |
American Military University has its pro's and con's. For a soldier it is ideal! First off you receive college credit for approved military courses that are determined by AARTS (The Army / American Council on Education Registry Transcript System). For instance you receive college credit for graduating basic training. The credit is for Physical Education, imagine that. I was also given other credit in humanities (no comment) as well as several credits in general electives. This is probably the most military friendly university out there. If a college fails to recognize military service and are not a participant of SOC (Service Members Opportunity Colleges), they are off-base! The majority of colleges and universities are members of SOC.
American Military University is specifically geared towards, military. police and other government agencies such as; the National Security Agency, Central Intelligence Agency, Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms , Federal Bureau of Investigation, US Marshals and the new branch of Homeland Security. You can actually get a degree in some hard to find area's of expertise.

Internship Courses
American Military University has a very unique course for our Army Special Operations, Marine Recon and Navy Seals, all elite units. This is the main reason that I give AMU four stars instead of three as a user rating. You think getting a bachelors degree is tough? You should give the Army Special Forces, Marine recon or Navy Seals a whirl! These guys go through hell first just to see if they rate the schools. Once they are accepted they go through years of training and are bound to stay in the service for a certain amount of time. These guys are very smart and go through hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of training. If these guys get out after 8-12 years, what sort of recognition or credit do they get? Well not much until just recently. AMU now offers these elite an internship program which gives them some well deserved credit! Here are the two military type internships available.
~ SPECIAL OPERATIONS / LOW INTENSITY CONFLICT INTERNSHIP
~ MARKETING INTERNSHIP FOR MILITARY RECRUITERS

Taking College classes on the Internet!?!?
The first thing that came to my mind was will this school be recognized like a regular college, like the one a attended back home? The short answer is yes. Distance learning is very popular and respected as upper education. It's not Harvard but neither is your community college, eh? I transferred my Jr college credits over as well as my military experience and have a good jag of my Bachelors degree completed.

My Final Thoughts On American Military University
There are many things I like about American Military University. The main one is just the fact that I can get on the Internet an complete my degree from home. I also like the fact that they are geared towards helping the Armed Forces people. American Military University is one of three universities and colleges that the organization governs. The other two are American Community College and American Public University System (I have listed the web sites below). So they also have plenty of education available to the general public. Their web sites are very easy to use. The classes and instructors are very professional. The prices are reasonable. The books are FREE for undergraduate students. I give American Military University four of five stars.

Distance Learning is a new concept?
(A clip from AMU Visitors Center)
Actually 150 years ago--Sir Isaac Pitman of Bath, England taught shorthand by having students translate Bible passages and mail them to him for grading. So, distance education is not a modern phenomenon. It actually predates the modern University!
