Mardi Gras Hotel.

Written: Feb 26 '01
Pros:inexpensive, good location, refrig/microwave combo
Cons:dirty rooms, smoky smells, poor upkeep
The Bottom Line: This Days Inn is not worthy of travellers interested in nice amenities and clean rooms.

Why I stayed at this particular Days Inn:
Myself and 3 friends were going to Mardi Gras in Mobile and New Orleans. We live in North AL, and Mobile served as a good "central" location to stay. Plus, it was the only place that had vacancies according to all the searches I did on expedia.com, travelocity.com, and priceline.com. I booked the room on Feb 19 (Monday) and we were leaving on Feb 23 (Friday).

Price:
I assume we got a good deal. It's a difficult call because I booked the room through expedia .com. We got a discounted rate of $46.75 a night for 2 nights. After taxes the room was essentially $100 which was $25 split for ways. So that was an excellent hotel price to me I don't know what the regular rates normally are.

Staff and Accomodations
We arrived at approximately 8:00 pm and I went in to check us in. When I approached the front desk, the lady asked me for my name and successfully found my check in info. (I was a little nervous because this was the first time I had ever booked a hotel room over the internet)

She looked at some print out she had beside her and wanted to know how I had gotten the rate of $46.75. She didn't do it in a nice way either. She was all " rerror" [cat sound] about it. So I was polite in responding "Expedia.com". At which point she became even more perturbed and said something about how all deals with expedia.com were suppose to be off or something or other. I guess because it was Mardi Gras season or something. I really couldn't understand what she was saying because of slurred speech and some kind of other speech impediment. Nonetheless, we got the room at the booked rate. I was polite and nice the entire time, never condescending or arrogant, and I think that helped a lot. I got the key and we went to the room.

Upon entering the room, there was something amiss… The re-pungent smell of smoke filled the air. About that time the phone started ringing. I went over and picked it up and it was the lady at the front desk, she apologized for giving us a smoking room because it clearly said on her sheet that I had requested non-smoking. She offered to change rooms for us. I went back to the front desk and retrieved the key to our new non-smoking room…. Which oddly enough was 2 doors down from the previous room. Upon entering this room, there was no smell of smoke, just the usual 'hotel' smell.

We unloaded our bags and looked around. It was a typical 2 bed setup with a TV, rather good sized refrigerator, and microwave. The table in the corner was a bit wobbly (which came into play later during a late night game of scrabble).

The shower was noticeably 'dirty' … there was severe discoloration on the sides and floor area of the shower. Also, for some reason there was a big hole in the wall next to the toilet. I will say the shower head was a Teledyne Water pick… not just a cheap-o standard shower head. You could choose between like 6 settings, and they all worked for the most part. The effectiveness of the shower head was limited due to the fact that there was virtually no water-pressure. If there is one thing that drives me nuts, it's not having a lot of water pressure. It makes it nearly impossible to wash hair and stuff without good levels of pressure. I had a severe case of 'flat hair' as a result of this. It all reminded me of that episode of Seinfeld where the super installs "low-flow" shower heads in all the apartments to save money, and everyone has flat hair.

Ok onto other aspects. The beds were pretty comfy. The AC unit barely could be considered air conditioning. The temperatures were in the mid 70's and it was extremely humid. The AC barely kept us cool. Needs more BTU's. There was an adequate selection of TV channels. About 50 all together. No premium ones that I could find though. But then again, this is Mardi Gras… we're not there to spend time in the hotel room watching TV.

This room was connected to another room via a door… you know the deal.. At the end of the first night, some guests moved into the room beside us. These people next to us were putting out more smoke than a California forest wildfire. I've never smelled so much smoke in my life. It was so sick. Several times my friends and I were joking about it at like 2:00 am. I would just randomly yell out 'Cancer Sticks! You've got a cancer stick in your mouth!" Oh it was hilarious. What's bad though is not only are they giving themselves cancer, but us too. Oh well, win some, lose some.

Finally the most disgusting feature of the hotel room… the carpet was incredibly dirty. We were walking around with just our socks on and the bottoms of our socks were completely black after about 5 minutes. Ugh that was gross. We estimated the last time the floors had been swept was back when the hotel opened about 20 years ago. In order to remedy that, we bought some fresh krispy kreme doughnuts Saturday morning for breakfast and ate them right there in the room and let the 'krispy' drop all over the floor. We left for the Mardi Gras festivities and when we came back, voila'… swept floors.

Conclusions
I would not recommend staying at this hotel. There are 8 other hotels in the immediate vicinity of Tillman's corner and the I65 / I10 exchange. Try one of those instead.
