A Resume?? I Don't Have Any Experience!!

The Bottom Line Quality - Not Quantity. Apply all your skills to your resume. Including communication, work ethic, reliability, and maturity.

What do you put on your resume as a recent college graduate? Sure you've had jobs. But not related to your degree. You're not the only one. Companies hire recent grads all the time. What do they want to see on a resume?

*Application:

Your degree might be in software engineering but you spent your summers working for the city road crew. Tell me how you applied your education to this environment.

Through my employment with XYZ Paving, I learned to alter my communications to meet the needs of my co-workers. I learned to simplify complex ideas to demonstrate a solution to a problem. By limiting frustration and empowering others, I was able to handle difficult situations effectively.

*Maturity and Ability to Handle Responsibility:

I am a leader. I seek out additional responsibilities in every task I undertake. I financed my education with full-time and/or seasonal work. At XYZ Paving, I started as a utility worker. I progressively took on additional responsibilities through out my employment and now oversee a small crew for out of town jobs.

Work Ethic and Reliability

I received a perfect attendance award for 1999
I worked part-time but filled in with additional hours when they needed extra help

Skills A list of specific skills you acquired in college (or elsewhere) that would allow you to be successful in the position. Computer skills especially.

Some people prefer to list applicable classes that they might have taken in college. As an employer, I would rather see what skills you learned.

Sometimes, if a person has a lot of specific knowledge, I will even put a heading on the resume to punctuate. For instance:

Computer Skills Areas Where you would list programs, applications, networking, troubleshooting, and comparison skills

Languages For multi-lingual students. It would be appropriate to provide commentary on length of study or other experience utilizing the languages.

Management Skills Instead of listing management classes, highlight specific skills with brief commentary.

Team Building Concepts. Completion of a structured program involving coaching, motivation, and positive corrective action.

Quality Control Methods. Skills comparing and utilizing industry standard controls.

Here are some other tips in preparing a resume.

Cover Letter Can be an integral piece of information for a perspective employer. Different from a resume in that it should outline your expectations and goals in choosing your new job. If you are willing to relocate, travel, continue your education etc etc, this is the place to detail your flexibilities. Be careful to not write a long cover letter. A couple of short paragraphs will suffice.

ONE PAGE Employers receive tons of resumes. Be clear and concise. Put your pertinent information at the top of your resume. Most recruiters do not read every work of every resume.

Attractive, Easy to Navigate I don't want to muddle through a bunch of "buzz" words or wordy paragraphs to find information. Leave out unnecessary adjectives or repetitive descriptions.
