What do you think about the RX-8 now? (Reply to this comment)
by moresearch
Hello,

First thanks for giving us your opinion; I love actual owner’s opinions over so called experts.

I'm thinking of buying a RX-8 next year, a 2004 model so I can save some money, but I was worried about two aspects of the car.

(1) This oil consumption thing

&

(2) The fuel economy

Have you experienced any high oil consumption?

I can take 18mpg but not 13 like I heard one owner complain about. What type of fuel economy have you experienced?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

The automatic transmission cannot handle more, I suspect. That and they might have plumped up the midrange at the expense of the top end with the automatic's engine--it is a bit more powerful at lower RPM.

Others have done this in the past. Volvo's R cars currently are just as powerful with either transmission, but the automatic engine makes far less peak torque and thus is much less powerful in the midrange. Others don't readily spring to mind, but they are out there.

Mazda has a winner (Reply to this comment)

If you aren't in the market for a new car right now, do not test drive an RX-8. If you drive it, you will buy it. That's what we did and ended up buying one three weeks later!
We have owned the RX-8 for five months now. It is fully loaded, missing only the leather seat/steering wheel with colored leather inserts. We are completely satisfied with this car. It drives very well, has plenty of room for two and makes everyone smile; the people inside the car and those outside looking at it.
The car is not perfect. The gas mileage is not great. Visibility to the rear quarter is nonexistent. The styling from the rear may not be the best. And leave the $2,000 DVD nav system off your option list.
But the car has so many things going for it. The handling is perfect. The ride is comfortable. The interior noise levels are low. Four good friends can ride to dinner together. Two people can go across the country with all the luggage they want to bring. The styling from the front is aggressive and well done. And every one, that is every one, loves the suicide doors!

Why the difference in HP? (Reply to this comment)

I know this car is MUCH better with the manual, but I'm still curious about the difference in horsepower between the manual and automatic? I don't think I've seen such a difference in any other car...

It's not a rumor. I added this information to my review weeks ago.

Overstated horsepower. (Reply to this comment)

Rumor has it that Mazda overstated the horsepower on the RX8. Has anyone else heard this?

The FRONT right door was the one that was a bit hard to close on both cars, so it's not because of leverage. Also, why the right and not the left? I noted no rattles on the road, just substandard door closing quality. No tight thumps here.

If you've ever dealt with these doors on extended-cab pickups, it's the same deal. They're harder to close because you have less leverage on the door hinge. Also, trucks with those half-doors all shut the same way--no B-pillar on that side of the vehicle--and they ALL rattle when they close. I've yet to see one that doesn't.

Other than that, great review

I had to fill out a full credit report form before they would let me drive the car. That's a first. Luckily I had a passable credit score.

If I did not have three kids, I would buy this car before the 6. But also remember we're dealing with a smaller trunk and rear instead of front-wheel-drive. No telling how the RX will behave in the snow. Likely not well.

The G35 is a tougher call, but probably before one of those as well. I'm a sucker for great steering, and the RX has the G35 beat big time in that department. People who like torque, though, will prefer the Infiniti.

For 2004 I plan to extensively test drive the 6 and G35 with V6 and manual. So my views could change, as my current reviews were based on those cars with automatic. I already know, however, that they cannot come close to the RX-8 in handling or steering feel.

Finally, if you like how the RX-8 looks in the photos, you'll like how it looks in the metal.

Very Helpful as usual, but... (Reply to this comment)

This is a nice, "meaty" review. Loads of detail about the RX-8 and relevant comparison vehicles which will help any prospective buyer. Your reviews are like those in automotive journals, but with more usable information. Substantive and informative.

I'm a huge fan of yours. That said, I did notice some minor issues with punctuation and syntax. It just doesn't seem quite as polished and readable as your other reviews. But the information is still there, and hence my VH rating.

As a sidenote, do you find the RX-8 a better choice as a four-door, under $30K, daily driver and/or family hauler than the G35 sedan or Mazda6 (s model)? Do you think Mazda will turbo- or supercharge the Renesis?

Thanks for the review. Another coat of wax and it will really shine.

I just bought a 2000 Mazda 626, at a Mazda dealer nonetheless, and I definitely drooled just staring at this outfit. Someday...

Good review :)
