Faster...but where?Mar 16 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Wireless is faster and it get nice speed some times...but some other times...no...or even worst than dialups I do own a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) from July'00. In argentina, the telephone fares for internet connections are cheaper, but people like me make them expensive due the intensive use. Wireless just appears here by the hand of two companies, Velocom and Millicom; Velocom based in our capital city, Buenos Aires, and Millicom, located on those areas where there's no Cable, ADSL or ISDN wiring coverage. I took Millicom, which promised me 25 times faster than dialup connections, and 12 times faster than cable. Nothing happen...new companies, bad organization... ...the time passed by and they learn how to setup their networks. The system improves a lot from having slower speeds than dialups, to duplicate their download rates. BUT the trick of this company was to measure their speed from my network card to their router in the main antenna. The fact is...the speed was real from my PC to their server, BUT THEIR SERVER WAS CONNECTED TO MY PREVIOUS DIALUP SERVER (which owns one of the backbones), IMPSAT. So, my speed was "local" and the same time as requesting documents outside their net. PLEASE, check this, because REAL speed is from point to point, and not only "locally". This used to happen in Latinamerican companies...and I doubt that American companies works this way...but JUST ASK. |
