The Bottom Line The Greatest Gift's are not those you receive, rather those you give!
Sure, with the winning lottery ticket, I could buy my own gifts... at least those available for filthy lucre... but as I gave up avoiding this subject and began to ponder it, I realized that the one thing that our money can't buy is... time! So I began to ponder the aspects of time and how, in this fantasy we call "Five Gifts I'd Like", I could capture time and make it work for me instead of against me. SO... we now go to the movies! The 5 Gifts of Time that I'd Like... in no particular order... #1 (From the Movie: "The Girl, The Gold Watch, and Everything") I'd take the watch. The watch that was the centerpiece of this movie was a very special watch. It was a pocket watch, and when you opened the cover, you froze time... time came to a complete stop, as well as everything around you AND everybody except you! This would enable you to perform many good deeds that required only a moment... the power of this time-SAVING device was only available for one minute... a scant 60 seconds... per day! You could use it every day, but you had to use it wisely! This power could be used for good or evil, so it would be important to resist temptation and use it honorably... could you save a life? Could you stop a crime? Maybe just do something extremely nice in secret for a total stranger... #2 (From the television series "Early Edition") would come the newspaper... tomorrows paper, to be exact... and just as the star of that series spent his time running around the city preventing tragedies, so could any person who held this power. And the temptation to do wrong again is there... like the "sidekick" who always wanted the sports page so he could bet on the winning teams! But unlike the television series, you've got an extra edge... if you're caught in traffic with very little time to spare in preventing a tragedy, you've got that watch too... so you can buy a little more time! #3 (From the movie "Groundhog Day") comes the phenomenon of repeating the same day... over and over until you finally get it right! Imagine, having a literal eternity to study a city full of people... to learn their needs, their secrets, and their desires! And imagine having the chance for a "do-over" IF you totally bungle something... say the wrong thing (like Bill Murray did repeatedly to Andie McDowell in a ludicrous effort to win her affection in just one day!) or even cause one tragedy averting another! Well, in this case tomorrow is not another day, it is today all over again... until you get it all done right! #4 (From the movie "Jesus of Nazareth" (and the Bible of course)) comes the power to heal the sick and to raise the dead! Sure, it's not as "time-related", but in a sense, it is... because you're giving time to those for whom it has run out! One would be able to ease endless suffering and mourning... and you could touch many, many people in the course of a day... using Gifts 1, 2, & 3 in conjunction with this gift... you could find a city that has an epidemic... maybe visit a third world country where they inhabitants are forced to drink from contaminated water sources and eat things worse than what we scrape into our garbage disposal... you could literally do "a world of good" with these gifts... #5 (From the movie "Left Behind") comes a very special formula... a formula that transforms desert lands into fertile lands... far exceeding the abundant outputs of any known farms in the world... ending the increased world hunger that would stem from saving all those lives... making the world a very different and better place! Where nobody lacks for food or drink or health... where mothers in third world countries won't watch 40% of their off-spring die before they are seven years old because of water-borne diseases... where those kids and their American counterparts can be safe from those who would exploit them for financial gain or sexual gratification. And... if I'm rewarded for properly using my five gifts, then I might take a sixth... (From the movie "The Time Machine... yeah, the machine itself... just in case all else fails... |
