My wife and I started looking for a car with excellent gas mileage. The 2003 VW Jetta TDI certainly has the capability to get you where you want to go for the least amount of money. Fuel economy has averaged 42-44 miles per gallon so far and this car is barely broken in. I am impressed by the acceleration this car has available. You would never believe it has only 90 HP.
I am truly impressed with the quiet nature of this car. Yes, that's right, quiet even as a diesel. At idle the car is a bit clunky sounding, but at cruising speeds barely a sound. You certainly don't need to crank the stereo up to overcome engine and wind noise, though with the Monsoon stereo you will want to. The stereo is excellent for a factory installed system. The only problem with the system is the CD player does not play MP3s.
I am impressed with the standard safety features (5 star rating front impact, 4 star rating side impact). And the anti-theft device for the car and stereo keep the cost of insurance very low.
The leather seats are comfortable, but lack the leg support for anyone over about 5' 10". Back seat room is tight unless the front seat passenger pulls their seat forward. The split fold down rear seats are a life saver for those hard to manage items that don't quite fit in the trunk.
