The Bottom Line A collection of my favorite hip hop songs.
Ever since I was 9 years old I’ve liked hip hop music. I remember trying to get my mom to buy me Dr. Dre’s the Chronic when I was little. She wouldn’t buy it. I guess now I understand her reasons. I still got a tape of the Chronic from my friend. I didn’t really understand a lot of the lyrics. I just thought I was being cool cause they’re were curse words. I’ve been a fan of hip hop for a long time of my life. Lately I’ve started to realize how awful most mainstream hip hop is. It’s very single driven. Just make a few good tracks, add some filler songs and a bunch of stupid skits and you got a platinum record. I like to make mixes to avoid having to purchase bad hip hop albums. I like good rhymes, but sometimes a solid beat can carry a single. I also like the party rap of the early 90’s. It started out with party rap, then gangster rap came, now what’s popular is what I call “money rap” or “fake thug rap”. Rappers floss way too much. They should be concentrating on the quality of their rhymes, not their new Bentley. Anyway, this is Nick’s Hip Hop Mix Volume 1 The Source Magazine has a hip hop mix CD, why shouldn’t I? Easy E - Gimme That Nut Good ol Easy E was always my favorite NWA member. He’s the funny guy. The over the top character. Every good hip hop crew has one. PE had Flava Flav, Wu Tang has ODB, and NWA has Easy E. Gimme That Nut is a very vulgar, yet funny song. This is one of those songs I’d be embarrassed to listen to with my parents in the room. Xzibit - Paparazzi I’m not a huge fan of Xzibit, I don’t own any of his CDs. I really do like this song. It’s got a pretty nice beat, I like the beginning with the sound of the flashes of the camera. Xzibit raps about how rappers aren’t very talented and can’t rhyme very well. This is just a good song. Of the songs I’ve heard by Xzibit, this is my favorite song by Xzibit. Young MC - Bust a Move I love that party rap from the early 90’s. It’s way better than today’s fake thug stuff. Bust a Move is a classic party rap song. The vocals are pretty funny. They’re clever little rhymes. The beat is classic. Talib Kweli & Dead Prez - Sharp Shooters This song is by far the best song off the Rawkus compilation Lyricist Lounge 2. I love Dead Prez they’re one of my favorite rap groups. This is a political song. I don’t really agree with DP’s views on guns though. I used to think Talib was the weak half of Blackstar but now I know that he’s on the same level as Mos Def. The 45 King - The 900 Number Anyone remember Yo! MTV Raps? Anyone remember the Ed Lover Dance? Well this is the song that Ed Lover did the Ed Lover dance to. It doesn’t have lyrics beat the beat is so awesome it doesn’t even matter. I can’t help but do the Ed Lover dance when I hear this song. When you hear those saxophones you can’t help but move. MOP - Cold As Ice Ever since I heard “ante up” I’ve liked MOP. They have a nice sound. “Cold As Ice” is a great song. I love the hook with the high voice singing “you’re as cold as ice, you’re willing to sacrifice” The beat on this song is good head bouncer. The lyrics aren’t great, but sometimes I can forget about lyrics and just bob my head with the beat. Gza - Duel of the Iron Mic I like the Gza. He’s one of my favorite members of the Wu Tang Clan. I like the skateboard to his music. For some reason it’s good for that type of thing. I love the quotes from the old martial arts movies that are looped into this song. The beat is simple, but Gza can rhymes well enough to carry a song with a simple beat. Akinyele - Put It In Your Mouth Oh how I love my obscene rap songs. This is more of a novelty song. It’s another one of those obscene sex songs that’s laden with sexual metaphors. This has more of an oral sex theme to it. Whether you chose to lick p*ssy or d*cks people throughout the world it’s your pick. Those are some very classy lyrics. Mad Lion - Ganja Mad Lion’s my favorite raggae-rapper. He’s much better than Shaggy and Shabba Ranks. I myself do not puff on the ganja but I do like songs about it. That’s kinda weird that the straight edge kid likes his drug anthems. If you don’t know, then I will show you how to puff on the ganja Mad Lion also says this line in Spanish in this song. Ice Cube & DMX - We Be Clubbin (eye of the tiger remix) I’m not a big fan of either DMX or Ice Cube. The reason I like this song is cause the loop the hook from the Survivor song “Eye of the Tiger” into the beat. It’s got a nice danceable beat, too bad I don’t dance. Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg - Deep Cover This was the song that brought Snoop and Dre into the big picture. They did this song from the soundtrack of the movie Deep Cover. This is good gansta rap song. It’s got those nice lyrics about killing other gangsters, hustling drugs, and the possibility of snitching to the cops. Snoop does a good job on this song. I like his part better than Dre’s. Del the Funkey Homosapien - Phoney Phranchise Del the Funkey Homosapien is great. He’s so inventive and crazy you can’t help but love him. In Phoney Phranchise he just lets loose with crazy rhymes. Biz Markie - Just A Friend This song is so funny. It’s even funnier when you see the video. I don’t know why I like the novelty rap songs so much. I guess I’m easily entertained. Beatnuts & Big Pun - Off Da Books A deadly Latin rap combo, Big Pun and the Beatnuts. This was the song that brought Big Pun into the mainstream. The beat is a classic Beatnuts one. Big puns rhymes are full of great similes and metaphors. He shows just how talented he is on this song. MC 900 Foot Jesus - If I Only Had a Brain For some reason, I love this song. It’s been one of my favorite rap songs for a long time. This is a take off of the song from the Wizard of Oz. Nick’s Final Thought Well it’s been fun. I’m glad I was able to tell you nice people some good hip hop songs. I know this CD doesn’t seem to have any real direction or purpose. Actually, it doesn’t really have a purpose. It’s just a bunch of songs I really like. I just made this for fun. I couldn’t really think of what to write about so I figured I’d make a mix CD. Sometime I’ll make Nick’s Hip Hop Mix Volume 2. |
