| tenshiryu's Full Review: Apple Just Announced iBook 900MHz G3 14.1'' Combo(... |
This laptop is seriously a handy tool for people who travel a lot. My model is a bit pricey (a souped up version) of the original 900MHz model.
Here are the great things about this computer:
- MacOS X is incredibly stable!! Re-defines the term user-friendly operating system. VERY VERY EASY TO USE.
- Speed is fast enough that there is very little to no lag at all when opening programs or rendering image files. Even a really fast startup time!
- 60GB HD is excellent for storing anything from mp3s, video clips, photographs, and even hefty programs!
- 384MB RAM keeps programs running smoothly with no lag or choppiness.
- Image quality on the monitor is better than most (if not all) PCs. Crisp and realistic colours help when image-editing.
- Lightweight design (Something about 5-6 lbs entices me. I don't want to carry a heavy laptop wherever I go...)
- Body/frame is study and durable. Great for when you're clumsy and bump into everything
- AC Adapter folds up nicely - could fit into a pocket without wires sticking out everywhere!
- All white keyboard, all white laptop. Uniform colour makes it look so elegant and stylish! And looks DO matter with computers!
- QUIET. I rarely ever hear the fan buzzing, and I keep my computer on at night, sometimes.
- I've never had to call tech support or encountered anything severely debilitating with this computer!!
- Don't have to change refresh rate of monitor to avoid eye-stress!!
- ITS A MAC!!!! (duh) :-D
There are a few unfortunate pitfalls I have encountered with this laptop.
- Laptops in my opinion will always be slower than Desktop computers.
- Obviously the G3 processor cannot compare to a G4 (super computer) processor. Rendering times on iMovie are *significantly* slower than a G4.
- One of the blank spaces on the keyboard popped off. :-(
- Battery life says to be around 6 hrs, but for my settings the max I have gotten is around 4hrs.
- Speakers aren't very loud,...altho they are fine for one person sitting directly in front of the computer.
- Not very upgradeable. Can increase RAM (not much) and add an Airport card. Not sure about the rest.
- Max resolution size is 1024x768...Preferably would like better, but can't expect much for a 14in display.
- I wish Apple kept the option of getting iBooks in different colours. It would make for a more fun look.
I do a lot of image rendering in Photoshop as well as make home movies. iMovie, iTunes, and iPhoto are all incredible programs that are so easy to use and well-integrated that it makes the home movie-making process fun.
Going on the internet is easy, too. There is no need to install any ISP programs when running on OS X. High-speed internet connection makes it feel as if the computer runs faster, mostly when it deals with internet applications.
Overall, a very well-designed product. Great for beginners and intermediate users. Not the best product for professionals -- I'd rather get the PowerBook G4 for professional users.
(I can't quite remember the price I paid for this model,...)
