The whole purchase began with a cardboard box. In this important cardboard box were hundreds of video tapes. Not the fancy DVD kind but the old fashioned (by todays standards anyway) VCR tapes. The box was the system I used to hold all of the tapes that we taped or bought throughout the years.
There were, in fact, two cardboard boxes. One with professional and personal tapes and one designated for television quick tapes. Many times while my children were growing up they would want to tape hockey fights. Many times in the past I would have someone tape something I wanted to see but would be missing because I was away. Many times during the years we would want to tape a speech, or a newscast or numerous other quick kinds of things and we had collected hundreds of quick tapes with no labels. The professional tapes were the movies and vacation tapes that we bought throughout the years. And the most precious to us all were the family tapes that chronicled birthdays, grandparents, Christmas, vacations, and travels. And, somehow, we managed to find what we wanted when we needed it.
Then, the kids began to leave home. They began to rummage through the tapes looking for the ones that they wanted and the ones that belonged to them. Tapes ended up mixing between the two boxes as my frustration level increased. The answer was organization! with a capital O. The answer included the Sauder 1250-265 Audio/Video Storage Cabinet.
Like all of Sauder products, this is the closest to real wood you will get for a reasonable price. The price is reasonable because it is not natural wood but it looks close enough that you have to put it together to know. Thats the second reason for the inexpensive price; you put it together. There are two companies that I will buy and put together their products, one is Sauder (my favorite) and OSullivan which runs a close second. The reason they are my favorites (besides how nice they look) is that they are easy to assemble and Im assembly-challenged. I usually can figure out what goes where (with a few unnecessary parts left over) but sometimes Im not quite strong enough to get a tight fit. So it is handy when in the assembly mode to have a pair of strong hands around. Actually its also pretty nice anytime!
This unit is easily assembled. The manufacturer says that it stores up to 404 CDs, 80 oversized case VHS tapes, 152 cardboard case VHS tapes or 268 DVDS. Im not using it for either the CDs or the DVDs and Im mixing the use between the professional oversized VHS tapes (like Disney) and cardboard incased tapes from our video camera and the quick tapes weve saved from TV. Even with the mixed use, this cabinet holds a lot of tapes, maybe about 250-300 in my house. Its a nice feature that the shelves are made to accommodate whatever kind of storage you need it for.
It has two doors that swing open from the middle. Each door is part of the storage space on the inside. Each door swings completely, 180 degrees open so place it where they can swing out as wide as you like. The outside is a nice wood color that blends with my oak and my darker molding in the family room (where its located.) It is called Desert Oak and is a lighter rather than a reddish oak tone.
One of the really nice features is that it has a key lock. This enables those of you with small children to lock it up with tapes that you may not want the young ones (or even the older ones) to view without your permission. It also saves any possible embarrassment when your parents visit.
The official dimensions are W:24 1/8, D:14 1/8, and H:44 ½. That is a nice sized cabinet that enables you to place it in many locations around the room. I also have some tapes on the top since mine sits against a wall.
The only problem with the unit so far is that sometimes, because I have the doors filled with tapes, they will drag down on the door when in the open position and I have to lift to close the door securely after theyve been opened completely. But it is doable and not much of a disadvantage.
So, if you are looking for a storage unit that is easy to assemble, holds various types of media tapes, and looks really nice in your room then you need to consider this product. I, in fact, am looking into purchasing another one because I like it so well and it does such a good job storing my precious (and not so precious) tapes. Enjoy this one!
