Nice article. Like you said, slot A is dead but if you want to build a screamer of a system (that should be plenty of system for at least a couple of years) on a budget it can still be the way to go. The only caveat of course is that you'll have to buy the fastest slot A cpu you can afford now before all the supplies are gone. Of course you can probably also count on being able to find them used for years at shows or online.

FYI the Abit KA7-100 slot A board has a bank of dip switches for playing with fast side bus settings. I haven't played much with the softmenu III or the fast side bus dip switches but I've seen reports that you can often get a good EXTRA 100 mhz plus without a golden finger device on a slot A processor with this board. The instability at high fsb speeds is often blamed on the memory not being able to handle it and also the flawed VIA KX133 chipset that often can't go faster than 850mhz cpus. Slot A might be dead but don't dis it for us folks that can't afford to buy a new technology board every six months.
