Different books for different people

The Bottom Line It depends on what you are willing to spend and what you are willing to take.

Whether or not you should buy used books depends on what your needs are. For those that read novels, I'd recommend a library. Rarely do I read a novel twice. I can't understand people that amass these large collections of novels that they shove away on a bookshelf to collect dust. If you must have them for show, definitely buy used. Most people won't notice the difference if you buy good-looking books.

Textbooks, on the other hand, should definitely be bought used if at all possible. Many teachers insist on the most-recent version, but any student knows that books can cost several hundred dollars per class depending on the class. Any money that you can save on textbooks is well-earned. Most likely, you'll be passing it off on someone else in a few months.

Reference books depend on what they are referring to. Some subjects, such as basic math, don't change very often. Some subjects, like physics, are constantly being revised and will require the most recent version. You'll probably want to buy those new.
