Would you pay upwards of $50.00 for a sweatshirt? How about if I told you that it was one of the most comfortable sweatshirts you’ll ever slip over your head? How about if I told you that I washed it well over fifty times and it looks just about as good as the day I purchased it? Curious? I bet you are … Of course not many sweatshirts can carry those types of claims, after twenty or so washes the elastic starts to give out, it loses its shape or just starts to look old. I’ll admit it, I am a shopaholic but not the usual stuff that most women revel in like make up, shoes or purses. No, I go for the more practical things like athletic clothing, backpacks and knapsacks, sweatshirts and t-shirts. While I am a shopaholic, I also love bargains. I’d seen the Fox sweatshirts here and there and thought they were nice but not something that I could see myself forking out a huge chunk of cash on – until I came across it on sale. $20.00 for a sweatshirt that retails for more than twice that – how could I possibly pass that up?
If you’ve never seen any of the Fix related clothing, most of them carry one of the numerous Fox logos on the chest and some have the Fox Racing name and logo on them. There are a lot of different styles to choose from but some, like this sweatshirt, only have a limited number of colors that they are available in. Fox is one of the more popular companies here with Hurley, Billabong and FUBU being fair competition. One thing all these clothing lines have in common besides popularity is price – if you can find them for under $20.00 - $30.00 you better take advantage of it. I’m not one to jump on bandwagons and trying to be one of those “moms who wants to be cool” so I usually chuckle at most of the clothing trends and move on – in this case – the deal was just too sweet for me to pass on. This red, slightly oversized hooded sweatshirt was just what I needed for the cool winter nights, walks on the beach or wearing instead of a jacket. I removed the drawstring cord from around the neck – that’s just an accident waiting to happen in my case. A basic but sharp looking sweatshirt, this is one of my favorites when it comes to picking out something that is comfortable to wear.
Comfort
I own a lot of sweatshirts but this one is one of the most comfortable. After at least fifty washes it still has a thick plush feeling to the lining and isn’t the least bit scratchy. The waist and arm elastics are generous but not so much so that you feel like you are lost inside the sweatshirt. There no pilling or bunching of the material and after fifty some odd washes you’d know whether or not this is a lasting piece of clothing – trust me – it is. The outer shell is soft and smooth and retards a majority of stains. The hood is double lined and large so it can easily be worn over a baseball cap or hat. The only possible drawback about the large hood is that it does limit your visibility when you are running or rollerblading so pay a little extra attention to your surroundings when participating in activities – especially is you are wearing headphones.
Sizes
This is available in sizes small through extra large but it’s been my experience that retail stores don’t stock the larger sizes in the women’s design. I’ve had a lot of luck finding these at local stores like Pacific Eye’s & T’s but if you are having trouble finding this in your size, there are a lot of online stores that you can order from. You will want to check the sizing charts and make sure you are ordering the adult women’s size, not the girls / teens which are sized a lot smaller. I picked mine up about two years ago when a small extreme sport store was going out of business and there wasn’t much to choose from so I was a little surprised that I found an extra large on the rack. I prefer larger sweatshirts so I can layer my clothing in the winter months rather than having to wear a jacket so this was the perfect size for me.
Colors
This used to be available in black but now it’s only out in red and dark blue. Personally, I prefer the red just because it really pulls out the accenting of the Fox logo but the blue isn’t too shabby. I’m not sure when the black was phased out or if it was a promotional item – but I really wish I had one because as we all know, black goes with everything. As far as color fastness, this still has the same great bold impact as when it was purchased. I’ve had no problems with it getting lighter or losing the rich red color and that says a lot about the quality of the sweatshirt.
Price
As I mentioned, I got this when a store was going out of business and got a great deal on it. The suggested retail price ranged from $45.00 to $50.00 [fashion isn’t cheap], but got mine for half off the ticketed price of $40.00. This was a great deal and at the time I didn’t realize how lucky I was. If I would have known that this was going to last this long and look this great, I would have picked up a few more in smaller sizes for the boys. Yeah, I know they are listed as “women’s” but in all honesty, these really are a unisex item. Even at the suggested retail price, this is a good deal because with a little care when laundering it will last a long time. Be sure to check the end of season sales to save a few dollars and bookmark website that carry similar items.
Care
Since this is red you will need to wash it in cold water and follow the instructions regarding the first washing to prevent the color from bleeding on to the white logos. Never use bleach or any type of bleach alternative when washing this, cold water and a mild detergent is all you will need to get it clean. Also, resist the urge to use a pre stain product, this might leave spots of the sweatshirt a shade or two lighter and you won’t be able to see the tainted areas until it is completely dry. I made the mistake of shooting on some Shout on the back to try and get out some ground in dirt and paid the price for it. When I pulled it out of the dryer there was a round spot where I sprayed it. Over time it did fade out a little but I still know its there. Tumble dry with low heat for about twenty minutes then hang on a strong plastic hanger and allow it to dry completely. Since the hood is double layered it will take longer to dry than the rest of the sweatshirt so make sure to check this before you tuck it away in your closet. Avoid hanging this out in the sun to dry since it might fade parts of it. The Fox Racing logo is on both sleeves as well as the Fox face on the chest. These are done up in bold white and require a little care when laundering to prevent bleeding. Over time the white will lose a little of its brilliance but it won’t get dingy or turn pink.
The Bottom Line
If you are thinking about purchasing any of the clothing from Fix Racing, this one would be a good pick and is at the lower spectrum of their pricing scheme. Be careful when ordering online and make sure you are ordering from the correct section [Men’s, women’s, teens etc] to make sure you are going to get a sweatshirt that fits you properly. So far I have nothing but great things to say about this and after all the wear its received, it still looks fantastic. I’d recommend this for anyone that is a fan of Fox and related clothing lines and especially for teens that are particularly hard on clothing.
