nrgetic99's Full Review: Bazooka EL6A-HP Car Subwoofer
I recently bought a used pickup to use as a daily driver and to haul everything that goes along with my many construction projects. After a while, the stock sound system got me down so I installed a high end Kenwood Head unit with a small Alpine amp and some decent door speakers that I had from a previous vehicle.
The sound was tight and very acceptable but really lacked any bass to speak off. I started looking for something compact, sturdy and preferably amplified to ease installation.
I looked at the Infinity Bass Link which retails around $300 and turned out to be too big to go behind the seat in my std cab Ford. I looked at small enclosures with a single 10" sub but found that I probably needed a minimum if 300W to drive it so costs of enclosure/sub and amp were still around $300.
Kenwood has the "WooX" which is very compact but it looks a little fragile and is overpriced ($229)
Finally, I found the EL6A-hp on sale at $119 and decided to give it a shot. Install was a breeze and for me (head unit has low level RCA output) , involved 4 connections, + 12V, ground and right and left low level inputs. It uses a music sensing circuit to turn on but you can wire it with the traditional remote (blue wire) turn on.
30 minutes after opening the box, it was pounding away in the back of my truck. By adding a high pass filter to the front 6 1/2's, I got a much tighter sound on the doors and the baby tube added the bass I was looking for.
As the main driver is only 6 1/2 inches, it produces surprisingly controlled, tight bass. No boom or thud to speak of. Make sure you read the instructions ! It is sensitive to position. When I moved to a suggested position, 2-3 " from the corner and firing directly into it, volume and depth of bass improved.
Best part is as this install is totally stealth (head unit hidden in console with stock head unit in dash, speakers behind stock grilles), it does not boom outside the truck, it just rocks inside the truck.
My only concerns are :
1. Its supposed to be 100W so should pull around 8 amps and it has a 16 gauge power hook up . How many extra pennies would a binder post for bigger wire or a 12 gauge cost ?
2. Level control is tiny and really difficult to adjust so most folks will get the wired remote ($20) which is an extra...why not just add it to start with.
Other than that, this is HANDS DOWN, the best $120 I have ever spent on in car audio. My last sub was custom built glass enclosure and a 600W amp that cost over $1200 but can in no way be 10 times better.
If you want booming bass in a big vehicle look elsewhere but if you have a smaller vehicle or pickup, buy it, enjoy it, it may not make your license tag vibrate but if you just want bass in a small cab, it cannot be beaten.
The typical factory installed audio system is not engineered for the type of bass response discerning listeners demand from their systems. The speaker...More at Abe's Of Maine
