The Bottom Line Make a nice profile page, and promote (market) your CP site at the higher level. Here are the basics and the professional insights.

If you don't like my profile page, or if you feel it looks too amateur, don't waste your time. Stop reading my opinion here, and move on to other fellow reviewers. The design of the profile page might fit better at the categories under the advice for Epinions in general. But I didn't find any section to discuss the design. Moreover, I interpret the profile page as one of the important keys to integrate the CP site system with outside resources such as your web. Please allow me to submit this opinion here. Also, before you start reading my opinions, let me make sure that what will be written is based on my professional experiences. I work as a division chief of e-commerce for an electronic component company. I started their web site from zero, actually negative, and finally built the web site which makes more than $1 million annual sales. (I really wish I have worked on the sales-commission base. I could have made a serious money....) Things required for a Profile Page (1) HTML tags (2) Java scripts (3) Style sheet tags (4) Knowledge on color scheme (5) Knowledge on human engineering (6) File storage space and most importantly.... (7) Humor (1), (2), (3): TAGS Let's start with the following items: (1) HTML tags, (2) Java scripts, (3) Style sheet tags How to write Since Epinions restricts us from writing HTML tags on reviews, I cannot explain even the simplest HTML tags here. Please consult with the outside resources. If you have the problem in finding the resources, you can check the HTML data format section at Yahoo!: Go to http://yahoo.com/, and click through "Computers and Internet" - "Data Formats" - "HTML". There is a giant list you can depend on. You can steal my HTML tags on my profile page by looking the source file, if you want. But please do NOT steal my graphic files. The way to see the source file is: Right-click on the page, and choose "View Source". tag version If we want to do the business with the people who might own less powerful computers, we have to be careful so that the tags are recognized with Netscape Version 3. But as long as Epinions goes, we don't have to be careful too much. All the people here are supposed to enable at least Java scripts. Moreover, if the Java script is not enabled, the top banner is not displayed. In other words, you don't make any banner revenues from those visitors with Java script inactive. Assuming your reason to make a nicer profile page is to promote your CP site, they are useless (sorry). Forget the useless visitors, and focus on those who make you rich. One thing you have to pay attention is not to make your page with Microsoft's products, such as MS Word. Since Microsoft is trying to kick out the competitor (read Netscape), the page build with Microsoft product is not friendly to other types of browsers. I recommend you to type your page contents "manually". But if you cannot, make sure your profile page works fine with both IE and Netscape. types of tags To make the page look nicer, the knowledge on table tags is a must. Use tables efficiently as well as effectively. (4): COLOR SCHEME If you surf around Epinions, you often see the reviewer whose profile page has a nasty (sorry) background images. It is okay to have a background picture, but too impressive background pictures make the page look too dynamic. In other words, the visitors cannot focus on the contents, which is the most important. Use very light color, preferably the simple white, and let the visitors focus on what is "written" there. As for the font colors, too much use of the illuminating ones, such as fuchsia, makes viewer's eyes tired. Keep it simple. Preferably the simple black. (5): KNOWLEDGE ON HUMAN ENGINEERING In this section, I would like to focus on how to locate the objects in the profile page. The objects I mean here are mainly picture files, ad banners, logos, and other promotional things. We have to know how viewer moves eyes on the screen to promote a page effectively. This issue falls on the study by human engineering, though it's not limited to this. I have written an article on this issue. Though the title implies something different, I discussed the topic well there. (6): FILE STORAGE SPACE If you want to show only text on your profile page, this is not necessary. But if you want to spice up your profile page, a graphic file is a must. Moreover, if you are still placing an ugly (sorry) gray smilie as your picture, you have to find a file storage place to replace the picture. (7): HUMOR If you can make the visitor laugh, probably he loves you. Then, you are a winner. Don't forget a sense of humor. Keep your chin up, and enjoy the happy hour! OTHER COMMENTS In building your profile page, you can go either directions, very personally customized with your own preference, or very simple. If you are targeting some category-specific people, it might be a good idea to push your creativity very strongly. If you don't want to build up your personality at the profile page, your choice should be the very simple one. My recommendation for you is to go somewhere in the middle. Leave the impression on your personality at the viewer's brain so that the repeater will instantly recognize you. Note that the choice of style depends on how you want to promote the CP site as well. If you invite your friends to your profile page, you want to use it as the base station.
