Hide my flaws, but don't make them worse!! Concealer Safe List!

Mar 18 '01

The Bottom Line Will my concealer clog my pores? Read the safe list of concealers tried and tested. Check your own before you buy!

This article will hopefully help you pick a concealer that not only does its job in concealing pimples/acne and scarring, but more importantly, one that will not cause even more trouble for your skin!

If you haven't already done so, please refer to my article on Choosing the Right Foundation here:
http://epinions.com/content_1101897860

This article follows in line with that, to hopefully help you find a concealer, which is not full of pore clogging ingredients.

Comodogenic - what does that mean?

Comodogenic ingredients are those which will clog your pores, and most likely cause even more pimples and acne, for those of us with troubled skin.

Like picking a foundation, it is just as important to check out all the ingredients when picking a concealer, because ANYTHING that goes onto your face must be safe, to make sure they do not cause your skin to break out even more! After all we're trying to cover them with concealer, not make even more!!

Safe Concealers

The following is a list of Concealers which have been tested, and ingredients have all been checked. None of the ingredients in each of the following have been found to be comodogenic or highly irritating, so you know before hand that these are not going to cause pimples/acne or irritation to your skin:

* Christian Dior Hydrating Concealer
* Clinique Advanced Concealer
* Maybelline Shine Free Oil-Control Cover Stick
* Maybelline's Waterproof Cover stick (But this does contain oil so you may want to give this a miss)
* Physician Formula Beauty Spiral Perfecting Concealer
* Physician's Formula Powder Finish Concealer Stick
* Proactiv Concealer plus Color

Check ALL the ingredients

It is important that you check ALL ingredients in all your cosmetics, concealers, foundations, powders, anything you put on your face. This way you can be sure you know exactly what you are putting on your skin.

If you haven't already checked the other article, you can find the complete list of comodogenic ingredients here:
http://www.sageadv.com/Articles/acne_detective/article6.htm#inglist

Why not print out a copy and take it with you next time you go shopping for a concealer or other cosmetics.

Check the products you are using too

By the time you are reading this I'm sure you already have a few different types of concealers and cosmetics around the house. It is a good idea to check each of their ingredients with the ingredients list on the link above.

If you find any with comodogenic ingredients, then at least you know which ones are most likely causing your acne to continue or become worse. I wouldn't be using these products anymore.

Although it seems like such a waste to throw these products out, it is a small price to pay. I threw out many bottles of foundation, concealers and a fairly new powder, as well as some face lotions, all because they had a whole lot of pore clogging ingredients.

Months later I am using all safe products and my skin has never been better. The condition of my skin has really stabilised, and I know now, and can safely say that my makeup is not causing breakouts!

General Tips on picking a concealer

A lot of concealers contain oils, especially the creamier formulations. Although some oils are not comodogenic, that is not found to be pore clogging, if you have oily skin, you may still want to stay away from them. Although they may be safe in terms of causing acne/pimples, they will only add more oil to your face, and I'm sure you won't be wanting that! Especially since it will cause your concealer to wear off much more quickly!

I find for oilier skins, wand concealers are the most effective and long lasting. For drier skins, concealer sticks are generally creamier and blend more smoothly.

Ultimately, choosing a concealer will largely depend on your skin type and what suits you, but the important thing is to CHECK THE INGREDIENTS first!
