UPDATE ON OCTOBER 20, 2003 Since writing my first review, I have received several items from Overstock.com that are complete rip-offs. The first was a spaceheater that didn't work coming out of the box (details at ...

DON'T SHOP WITH OVERSTOCK.COM (Reply to this comment)

I have trying for over a month to get a return authorization from overstock.com on a product they sent that was not what I ordered. I have contacted the company over five times and been ignore each time (they state that the mailing label will arrive in 3-4 business days, but it never has and then they say the same thing each time). I have talked to several people that have had the same thing happen. I wish I had talked to those people prior to ordering. I would never have ordered from them and never will again.

Overstock.com No wonder They are Cheaper (Reply to this comment)

When you order a big ticket item, like a chair that you have to put together yourself, you better hold your breath that the holes match up. Any I ordered a swivel recliner chair. Upon opening the package placing the base on the floor, I proceed to try to put this chair together. Pretty hard when one of the parts was originally put together in the factory BACKWARDS. There was no way to fix this problem. Had to return. I was told that I am not the first one to have this problem. I took one more change and exchanged it for another. Guess what, the second chair came the same way. What a waste of my time, not to mention the back breaking experience of putting this chair back in the carton to return. This was my first and last experience with overstock.com.

Buyer Beware of Overstock.com (Reply to this comment)
by starrgirl
I have gotten several things from Overstock.com and have found that if all goes well and you read the item description carefully, you will probably be ok. But if you have a problem with your order you are in for an ordeal.

My last order included several items and when I rec'd the order, several boxes were taped together inside a larger box. The box had been poorly packed without much filler and some of the glassware was broken. I was disappointed as the glassware was quite beautiful.

I contacted Overstock.com who supposedly set me up to receive a return label. After a couple weeks, when I hadn't rec'd the label, I called again. I was told that the first person hadn't "released" my return and that would be done and I would receive the label.

A few days later I got a label by email, but it wasn't printable. The information at the top and bottom of the page would print, but not the label. I contacted O again. They would correct this within four days, I was told.

That was a couple weeks ago, and all we have done is send emails back and forth without accomplishing anything. Overstock suggested that I order my glassware again, to which I said no. Why would I order and pay for it again when I didn't get what I paid for the first time?

Then they suggested that I wrap up the box, go to the PO and see what the shipping will be, and they will send me a voucher on a future purchase. Again, I said no. They have my order number, my address and zip code and the shipping information (weight) of the product. Why should I go to the PO to find this out for them?

So, it's been a month now and I have no glassware, no refund and no return label. Customer service at Overstock.com has been useless. So be careful what you buy from them because if you have any problems, you might not be able to resolve them.

Problems with returning Defective item (Reply to this comment)
by jrichga
I purchased a diamond circle necklace off the Overstock.com website for a gift and had it shipped to myself 2nd day air. It had the most fabulous positive reviews so I thought I would jump on the great bargain.

I am SO glad I sent it to myself first instead of to the recipient! I received this 2nd day Air (4 days later) had opened up the box, opened the yellow paper envelope, and inside yellow paper envelope was a tiny plastic baggie with the necklace balled up in a knot!

After I had unknotted this necklace, the end links were saudered together and the clasp was left dangling. I couldn't even open the necklace it was broken! JUNK.

Well long story short, I have called numerous times and spoke w/ customer service and 2 managers to try to get this item returned. They said I wouldn't have to obviously pay to have this shipped back to them. They still to this day hadn't sent me a return label like they kept saying they would after 48 hours, and it's been 8 days! I just paid to have it shipped back today because I am tired of dealing with them. I shouldn't have had to do that. Now it is going to take up to 2 weeks to get my money back from this.

From the experience I went through with them, I would really think twice about ordering from here again.

Please Do Not Purchase from Overstock (Reply to this comment)

From the beginning...on 7/6/04 I purchased (cash) a "brand new" $1300 Apple Powerbook. I received it a week later and it was used. I sent it back for an exchange that was suppose to take 14 business days. After 40 phone calls and 40 days later I finally received a replacement. It was used again. I have spoken to numerous Supervisors and emailed the CEO Patrick Burne himself and all they can give me is a refund! This is false advertising. The laptop was stated NEW on the website and before I purchased it I also spoke with two of their computer techs and they both reassured me that it was Brand New and sealed in box. THEY LIED. I wouldn't mind just getting my money back except here is my predicament. I purchased a new laptop from my the Macintosh store a week before buying the one from Overstock and was very happy with it. Then I saw this one on Overstock and returned mine to Macintosh who charged me a $160.00 restocking fee. I would have never returned my original laptop had Overstock told me the truth and said that their laptop was used. Now I am looking for a lawyer to help me in this matter because I truly believe that Overstock owes me a Brand New Apple Powerbook because that is what I purchased. Please learn from my ordeal and never buy anything from this site. Customer Service is terrible! Thanks for letting me vent.

I had several great experiences with Overstock and my first review was glowing. Then I had a string of bad experiences with damaged or broken merchandise. Even if they take it back, it is still a hassle to wrap up the items, get a return authorization and drive the package over to the post office. Reading other reviews, I am not the only one who has had these problems, so I guess this is how they operate their business. As one reviewer said, it is a bit like gambling. I will go back to buy their books but will think twice about other items.

Thanks so much for your comment.

I've purchased a ton of stuff from Overstock.com in the past couple of years - I've been setting up a new household and have purchased everything from featherbeds to vacuum cleaners from them. With only one exception (a Sony phone that was nearly useless, but which was immediately replaced and upgraded), the products I've purchased have been a pleasant combination of functionality and value.

Nevertheless, your experience is cautionary - I hope your couple of bad experiences will be resolved.

Thanks for your comment. I saw many hardcover books marked down - but the paperback versions were still cheaper. It is good to know there are some bargains - I will check it out again next time I am on the site!!

About their prices, I ordered a copy of The Prince of Providence from Overstock for $13, shipping included! Barnes and Noble was getting $25.95 for the same book, a fairly new release.

Great review!

I thought overstock had their act together. I do a lot of on line shopping and they were really at the top of the range. They definitely have some good buys. I know I will be back to look for more stuff.

I always take a peek at this site, but I have read other bad reviews about Overstock. Thanks for writing this, I think I may just give it a try.

My best,
