500 Pages of Essential Hawaiian Geology
Written: Aug 29 '03
Pros:A comprehensive, excellently illustrated survey of deep-sea volcanism and island formation.
Cons:Latest edition was published in 1983 - a long time in any scientific discipline.
The Bottom Line: BUY IT at a discount or used price... and encourage the publisher to come out with a new edition!
There is nothing quite like this University of Hawaii book, save perhaps the excellent but brief work "Roadside Geology of Hawaii". "Volcanoes in the Sea" is a comprehensive, splendidly illustrated survey of deep-sea volcanism and the formation of mid-ocean island chains like Hawaii. It's a beautiful book which invites casual browsing and leads on to careful, systematic study. If it has a fault, it would probably be the time which has elapsed since the most recent edition was published. When used as a college text, instructors will no doubt supplement this work with selected readings from subsequent journal articles in relevant fields.
