LIP FROM LANCASHIRE-TAWK LAAK ME!Mar 19 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Lancashire dialect is possibly one of the broadest but there is a sure fire way to break language barrier-ask them to speak slowly. No matter which part of England you intend to visit, you will definitely come across DIALECT and in England there are many which differ from each other according to the region. Lancashire which occupies most of the north-west of England and which is the place where I was born and raised has a particularly broad accent which is filled with dialect. For example many separate words are joined together in a lazy attempt to speak faster: TURT: to the FURT: for to WORRELL: what will DUST: do you "Am goin TURT shop FURT get sum praters." "I am going to the store to get some potatoes." "What DUST do fur a livin?" "What do you do for a living?" "Worrel it be, then?" "What will it be then?" (This will be asked of you in a pub as regards what you would like to drink) EEYUP: Hello LAD: Lad (friendly referral to a male) LASS: Lass (friendly referral to a female) So if somebody were to say, "Eeyup, Lad," or Eeyup, Lass," it would be a greeting meaning, "Hello friend," even if you are strangers. SITHI: behold or listen up BONNY: pretty THICK: stupid "Sithi, tha's too bonny't be that thick." "Listen up, you are too pretty to be that stupid." Another word that is used often is REET which means right meaning VERY. E.g. If you are "REET FAER", you are "VERY UGLY." I could write a book on the dialect of Lancashire. It seems like a whole different language. However, don't let it intimidate you. If you ask the party you are speaking to to speak slowly, they WILL revert to the Queens' English as it is hard to speak our dialect slowly. This dialect is not taught in school, it is what we are raised with and people from Lancashire are very proud of it. We are also a very friendly lot and love American visitors so next time you come to England, try our end of the country and come and tawk laak me. Terrah fer nowh (ta ta for now) |
