The Good:
To those who want to quickly glance at the specification, I am listing them below:
Memory: 64 MB, built-in. No expansion slot.
Battery: 1 AAA, alkaline lasts about 5 hours.
Case: combination of aluminum and plastic.
Noise Ratio: 85 dB
Frequency Range: 20-20,000 Hz
Earphones Output Power: 5 mW @ 16 ohms.
File Transfer: 7MBPS thru USB.
Kudos to the engineers and designers at Samsung for coming up with a very user friendly and stylish MP3 digital audio player. They have done their homework. I said that for the following features/reasons:
1. The accessories come complete with a belt clip, arm band and neck strap. Obviously, portability was in mind. There is practically no way for you to miss bringing this along.
2. Installation CD is a breeze to work with. I have installed it quickly on a Windows 98 OS without any problems. i just don't know how easy it is on Windows 2000 or XP. The software is very user friendly and organized intuitively. You just have to initiate the program to search for all of your mp3 files in the hard disk and from then on you only work with the database it creates. Transferring files is as simple as checking the files you want and clicking the send icon. Speed of transfer is as fast as you can get from USB 1.1.
3. The unit is small enough to fit in your shirt pocket and is not heavy on your arms in case you need to use the arm band. Use of aluminum makes it more knock-friendly.
4. For the controls, they are neatly organized and are easy to learn. The play button is a feather touch toggle switch that you also use to forward or reverse on tracks. There is a hold button that prevents accidental changing of tracks by pushing the wrong buttons. The mode button is menu driven which is easily navigable. You can change settings, equalizer, time and other what have yous. Time can also be set automatically through link with your PC.
5. On the sound, the unit comes with high fidelity earphones that compares with Sony fontopia earphones. The earphones deliver warm bass that is not overpowering and the treble is clearly balanced. For those who prefer punchy bass, they could probably use Sony EX-70LP or Koss' the Plug and be extremely delighted. The equalizer has 8 settings with option on extended dynamic bass for some of the settings. Granted that you make MP3s at 128 KBPS @ 44 kHz (should be the least in my opinion), the sound is definitely of a premium class. There is sonic clarity without being too loud and the words of the artists are very audible. The lows, mids and highs are blended with a balance without any range drowning the others. This is something lacking nowadays with regular portable CD players from Sony, Philips and Aiwa. Their sound has too much punchy bass that it drowns the middle frequencies and the vocals appear almost mute.
The Bad:
As with everything, there is always room for improvement. For one, this unit is power hungry. An alkaline battery lasts only for 5 hours which is already short compared to new standards coming out. At least 10-hour battery life should be standard. As this unit maybe classified with audio purists, matching it with a "plug" type earphone would provide better isolation especially while traveling in planes or trains. These earphones are commonly manufactured in Korea, anyway, so Samsung should consider them. Lastly, it would be great if there was an option for memory expansion using MMC or Smart media cards. This is common with the other brands so why was it left out?
Overall:
Definitely, the good outweighs the bad for this MP3 player and the price is very much reasonable. For those who care about the quality of music they listen to more than the size of the player, this is a must buy.
