This is a good book to read if you like talking animals or your children do. I am 28 and I still love this story and also still have a copy.
The story starts with a pig that is born a runt. The farmer wants to just dispose of him but the young girl in the story, Fern, is adamant that he not be killed.
She takes him and nurses him and helps him to grow strong although he stays on the small side for a pig. She names him Wilbur.
The adventures that Fern and family go through while raising this pig are hilarious. Then though the day comes when Wilbur is too big to be a 'house pig' any more.
They find him a home at a nearby farm and Fern goes to visit everyday. This is where Charlotte and her web come in to the story along with a whole slew of other characters mostly consisting of animals.
My favorite is the rat, Templeton. He is the essence of selfishness yet in the end does something almost completely selfless in an effort to save Wilbur's life.
I am not going to spoil the entire story for you but this is one book I recommend every one read regardless of the age they are when they first read it.
This book has many good lessons that are indirectly stated. Templeton the rat and his selfishness is just one. We see how his attitude causes him to be treated by the other animals and we also see him reform at the end even if only a little bit.
This book also covers the subject of death, fairness, and so much more. All this was done in a story that is highly entertaining to read for all ages.
This is one book that I will always have a copy of and will read again and again.
