NiNi's Treehouse is a Prime Example

The Bottom Line If my children are watching TV it must be educational or non violent. I would much rather they read their books.........

I am very picky about what my children watch on television. My children have their own TV room. In their TV room I have set it up so they are only allowed to watch the channels PBS, Cartoon Network, Nick, and TLC or a movie(which they have many of).

Although they can only watch these channels they still have to be watched. For instance, I do not like my children watching the programs that they air in the evening hours on Nick. Like, Rugrats (Angelica is so mean and whiny), All That (I don't want my kids walking around saying "like, duh") real intellectual huh?

This morning while trying to find something new and educational for the kids to watch I came across a show called NiNi's Treehouse. This is a prime example of what I don't mind my children watching.

NiNi's Treehouse is a show in which she, Norman and the Fingerlings live in a Treehouse in Oooberryland. The Fingerlings are three adorable red dolls that have their own distinct personality ranging from their likenesses, size and intellectual level. There are also creatures called the Teezels that live in the Treehole and help out on adventures and learning activities.

The reason I like this show and find it appropriate for my children is because it is on twice in the morning on TLC. At 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. I know children learn by repetition but watching the same shows over and over again gets boring. Each episode of NiNi's Treehouse is different and each teaches valuable lessons.

This show has almost everything I look for when picking something suitable for my children who range from the ages 2 months and seven years. They all watch this. Yes even the baby. He liked the and colorful scenes. My children are taught the importance of a clean environment indoors and outdoors. They are taught the importance of eating healthy staying healthy and exercise. They are taught to use their imagination when going on adventures, doing, artwork, playing, and completing activities.

If you log on to Discovery.com you can actually look and see what the different shows were about that were already on and what the shows in the future will be about for the rest of the month. Yes, it sounds strange but you can look up TLC on the Discovery Web page. For instance, tomorrows show will be about flying. They will have to help figure out a way to make a paper bird fly. They will be using paper planes, bouncy balls and whirlagigs.

These are the type of shows I like to have my children watch. They are allowed to watch things like Auther, Blues Clues, Nora the Explorer, Franklin, Clifford the Big Red Dog(my 2 year old's favorite).

My children are not allowed to watch anything like talk shows, night comedies or even the news. Seems that children now a days are striving off the attention they will get when they do something wrong and it is put on the news or in the paper. Everyone just wants to be like everyone else. Children need to be taught that we are all different and special and they do not need to act out negatively to gain attention. They need to use their imaginations and skills to become the best THEY can be. Yeah, they could use their imagination watching things they should not be watching but I know the end result won't be pleasant.

Everyone asks what's wrong with today's society but it all starts at home. True some things we think should not be aired on television but we as the parents should be there to make sure our children do not see or pick up things inappropriate. We must also remember that each child is at a different level mentally. So what might be appropriate for someone else's seven year old may not be appropriate for mine. Parents must use their best judgement when it comes to children. Whether they see something somewhere else or at your home you should always make sure that your lines of communication are open. Explain to your child the differences between reality, fantasy, and right and wrong.
