A Rotten Problem

The Bottom Line One would think that veterinarians would be more alert to the different breeds and be prepared to deal with all of them. They are, in fact, veterinarians.

When I went to seek out a veterinarian for my dogs, there were several things I had to consider. First, I own Rottweilers and there are some vets who believe all the gossip they hear about this breed. So I had to call ahead to find out which ones were not adversely affected by the name...Rottweiler.

The first response I came across was the restraint problem.
1. Do you own a muzzle large enough for a Rott?
2. Can you get the muzzle on your Rott?
3. Do you have insurance?

Okay, moving on-the next problem was the size factor.
1. How much do they weigh?
2. Do you feed them a raw diet?
3. Are you bringing more than one?

Well, now we are making some headway. But how do you really feel?
1. How long have you had them?
2. Have they ever bitten anyone?
3. Do they have rabies shots? (duh, why would I need a vet)
4. Do they wear choke collars?
5. Can you control them?
6. Would you pay an additional fee to have us look at them?
7. Are they fixed...neutered/spayed?
8. Do you use them to hunt? (?????)
9. Do they like other animals and small children?
10.Where do they live, inside or out?

Now all these are good questions, however, they have nothing to do with coming to the vet for a shot. So, my search continues. By the way, they are controlled, have never bitten anyone, love children, like other dogs, eat dog food, and sleep with me. Isn't it amazing how a bad reputation can run a beautiful breed of dog, not to mention a potential veterinarian customer.
