Take care of everything from death to taxes!
Written: Mar 01 '01
Pros:Quick, easy, thorough, inexpensive.
Cons:For the life of me, I can't think of any!
The Bottom Line: Why spend over $100 to have a CPA do your taxes when you can do it yourself (at home, in your own time) for $15?
I've been using Turbo Tax for 3 years now. Prior to this year, I used Turbo Tax Deluxe. I just wasn't sure if the regular version would suit my needs. This year, I bought the regular version, and (thankfully) it does everything I need.
I only paid about $15, not the $30 listed on Epinions. I bought it at Target, but found it pretty much everywhere for $15.
For those of you who are worried about doing your taxes with home PC software, I say, don't fret. Turbo Tax holds your hand and asks very easy-to-understand questions so you can get the job done right.
Here's the kind of tax info I had. This will give you some kind of benchmark as to whether or not the regular version is suited for you.
W2 for me and my wife
1099-INT (from bank interest and mutual funds)
1099-Misc
1099-Div (From mutual funds)
K-1 (from an inheritance I received)
The purchase and sale of stocks (both long term and short term capital gains)
Deductible child care expenses
Charitable contributions
Itemized info for mortgage interest
Rolling a regular IRA into a Roth IRA
As you can see, there are some not so normal items I had to handle with taxes this year (The Roth IRA and the inheritance issues). The regular version of Turbo Tax took care of everything. It was easy and fairly fast.
I just wish I was getting something back this year. But that's not Turbo Tax's fault. It was that darn inheritance. I guess it's true, only 2 things are certain. Death and Taxes.
