I Vant To Bite Your Neck....

Mar 21 '01

The Bottom Line The face of Vampires has changed over the years, sometimes for the better, sometimes not. This list contains the best and most unforgetable films in this genre.

Vampires, vampires everywhere. The mysterious, deadly, and oh so sensual, vampire, has had many faces over the years when it comes to the theatrical vampire. From the clawed, pointed ear, demon looking vampire of Nosferatu,to the good-looking,sexy vampires of The Lost Boys, vampires come in all shapes, forms and sex. One thing that seems to remain constant in vampire films,is the relationship between vampirism and sexual longing. Now without further ado, here is my list of the 10 Best Vampire Movies, with the obligatory honorable mentions,of course.

Honorable Mentions

Saturday the 14th--- Ok,I admit this movie is rather stupid, but it is campy and I just loved it as a child.

My Best Friend is a Vampire--- Nobody ever said a vampire film had to be scary and this one is just downright humorous.

Interview with the Vampire--- You may be thinking,"What?! Just an honorable mention?!" That's right. This movie was good, darn good, but it still doesn't make my 10 best list. It comes in at a honorable #11.

On With the Show

#10.The Hunger (R) (1983)

Starring
Catherine Deneuve--(Miriam Blaylock)
David Bowie--(John Blaylock)
Susan Sarandon--(Sarah Roberts)
Cliff De Young--(Tom Haver)

The Blaylocks are on the prowl for young blood. They frequent nightclubs in their quest and take home their "guests" for a little midnight snack. When John Blaylock, ages instantly,in the office of Sarah Roberts,Miriam must find a new partner. She sets her sights on seducing Sarah.

The Hunger features one of the most seductive and brutal scenes,in vampire fils to date. It also, puts a new spin on vampire lore,by allowing its vampires to walk around in broad daylight and dying of old age.

#9.Near Dark (R) (1987)

Starring
Adrian Pasdar--(Caleb)
Jenny Lewis--(Mae)
Bill Paxton
Lance Henricksen

After Caleb is seduced by the new girl in town,Mae,he finds out that she is no ordinary girl. She is a vampire. Mae roams the land with a group of vampires, who kidnap Caleb. They are on the lookout for food and when the group targets Caleb's sister and father,he is forced to make a choice. Does he stay with his new family, those who are like him or does he stay loyal to his true family.

Decent special effects and acting make this an enjoyable film to watch. It also lends vampires a conscience.

#8.Fright Night (R) (1985)

Starring

Chris Sarandon--(Jerry Dandridge)
William Ragsdale--(Charlie Brewster)
Amanda Bearse--(Amy Peterson)
Roddy McDowall--(Peter Vincent)

Charlie Brewster has some new neighbors. After seeing a few dead girls discarded by the new neighbor,Jerry Dandridge,Charlie decides to investigate. What he soon discovers is that his new neighbor is a vampire. After trying to convince his family and friends of what he has discovered,(of course no one believes him),he turns to the host and hero of a local T.V. show,Peter Vincent, fearless vampire killer.

Outstanding special effects, especially for this genre, and great performances by Christopher Sarandon and Roddy McDowall, along with the fact that this film is quite funny, makes Fright Night a winner.

#7.Salem's Lot (PG) (1979)

Starring

David Soul--(Ben Mears)
James Mason--(Straker)
Lance Kerwin--(Mark Petrie)
Bonnie Bedelia--(Susan Norton)
Reggie Nader--(Kurt Barlow)

When author,Ben Mears, returns to his New England hometown of Salem's Lot,he knows something is amiss. It seems Kurt Barlow is a vampire and he has infected most of the residents of this small hamlet, with an unsatiable thirst for human blood. With the help of a boy,Mark Petrie,Ben attempts to rid the town of this evil child of the night.

Based on Stephen Kings book of the same name,Salem's Lot has stood the test of time remarkabley well, considering it was a made for TV movie. No,it doesn't have the greatest special effects, but even after 22 years,it is still creepy as hell.

#6.The Lost Boys (R) (1987)

Starring
Jason Patric--(Michael Emerson)
Corey Haim--(Sam Emerson)
Diane Weist--(Lucy Emerson)
Barnard Hughs--(Grandpa)
Keifer Sutherland--(David)
Corey Feldman--(Edgar Frog)

When the Emersons move to Santa Clara,"Murder capital of the world",the older boy,Michael, falls in with the towns "bad" kids, and boy are they bad. This is a gang of motorcycle riding,Jim Morrison worshiping, suck the life right out of you, vampires. Michaels younger brother,Sam,recruits the Frog Brothers, two self appointed vampire hunters,to rescue Michael,(who has suddenly turned into the Flying Nun),from bad boy David and his group of vampires. The demons of the night must be destroyed before they take over all of Santa Clara, and Sam and the Frog Brothers are on the hunt.

Humorous and a definite product of the eighties,(everyone looks good, not an ugly vamp in the bunch),this films best scene is the action packed showdown between the good and the bad,at the end. Truly visually stunning.

#5.The Addiction (R) (1995) (Black and White)

Starring

Lili Taylor--(Kathleen Conklin)
Christopher Walken--(Peina)
Annabella Sciorra--(Casanova)
Edie Falco--(Jean)

After NYU grad. student,Kathleen,is bitten by a vampiress, she begins to crave the blood of anyone and everyone she meets. Her addiction to blood is like that of an addiction to drugs, only here, the drug of choice is human blood.

Look for a great performance from Lili Taylor, but the show stealer,is Christopher Walken. His is a great performance in a small role.

#4.Nadja (R) (1995) (Black and White)

Starring

Peter Fonda--(Dracula/Van Helsing)
Elina Lowensohn--(Nadja)
Martin Donovan--(Jim)

Nadja is stalking the people of Manhatten's East Side. But someone is stalking Nadja,as well. It is the same person who murdered her father,Dracula. Nadja soon enters into a relationship with a young married woman, who's uncle-in-law,is none other than Van Helsing, vampire killer.

Filmed,in part, with a plastic toy Pixelvision video camera, this film goes from clear in some scenes to gritty pixelated images in others. While some won't like this,I believe this makes it more entertaining and unusual.

#3.Bram Stoker's Dracula (R) (1992)

Starring

Winona Ryder--(Mina Murray/Elisabeta)
Gary Oldman--(Prince Vlad Dracula)
Anthony Hopkins--(Dr. Van Helsing/Chesare)
Keanu Reeves--(Johnathon Harker)

After avenging the death of his wife,a 15th century warrior vows to live on through all time. He soon sets his sights on Victorian London and Mina Murray. Could this Mina be Prince Vlad's lost love reincarnated?

Outstanding acting and breathtaking special effects,it's sure to make this film a favorite for many years to come.

#2.Vampire Hunter D (NR) (1985) (animated)

The mysterious D,is a hybrid, half human and half vampire. He is a hunter of vampires and must battle his own ravenous hunger and evil nature. D soon finds himself in a small hamlet, lorded over by the powerful,Count Magnus Lee,vampire lord and his army of minions. After the Count has D's love interest,Doris, kidnapped for his own use,D must set out to rescue Doris.

Although not rated this film contains extreme violence and brief nudity. Even if you don't normally like Japanese Anime, give this one a try.

#1.Nosferatu (NR) (1922)

Starring

Max Schreck--(Count Orlock/Nosferatu)
John Gottowt--(Prof. Bulwer)
Gretta Schroder--(Ellen Hutter)

Count Orlock is Nosferatu, the bloodsucker who brings death and despair to the town of Bremen. When young real estate clerk,Thomas,is sent to finalize a sale with Count Orlock,he is imprisoned. Then the Count travels to England to claim Ellen,Thomas's wife,as his own.

Although it's been 79 years since this film was made, the images have retained the eerieness that makes this a must see. Even if only once. So often in todays vampire movies,we see an element of the humane in the vampires, even if only during their death scenes. However Max Schreck puts the evil back in evil with his portrayel of Nosferatu.

Prepare to scared and terrified as you sit down to watch these unforgetable films in the Vampire film genre.
