The Best Restaurant In PhiladelphiaMar 22 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line An incredible restaurant to take clients. Everyone was dressed casual-dressy and having a great time. If you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere for clients, this is the place. Last weekend, my sister and I decided to venture into the city for a nice night out. We go out almost every weekend and have tried many different types of cuisines and are finding ourselves in a place where we could be professional critics now. We walked along Market Street, a great new place with many restaurants of many regions. We had a hard time deciding, but hearing so many great things about Tangerine, we decided to stop in. It is the "happening" place in Philly. We had to be a part of the "in" crowd. We didn't have reservations, and for a Friday night, we surely didn't expect to get in. Some of the other "in" restaurants we've been to definitely wouldn't even consider making room for people without reservations. How dare we stop in without having reservations We entered the doors and walked up a long corridor. Already we were impressed. The atmosphere struck us right away. There were pebble landscapes along both sides of the hall and pillar candles lighting the way. Through a second set of doors, we knew we were in store for not just a meal but a great experience. We ate dinner in the lounge. There were sofas with overstuffed pillows and low tables with some leather ottomans to pull up to each table. Tangerine definitely promotes group eating. We were introduced to the family style eating they serve. You are given dishes and when your food is served, it's served on platters, so that everyone can share. This is most important because so many of the flavors are ones not tasted before by many. The Moroccan and French cuisine is perfected here. I had already eaten dinner, but couldn't resist ordering anyway. I ordered an appetizer that consisted of chick pea crepes with chantel mushroom sauce (and let me tell you I don't much care for mushrooms) with chicken. It was plated with baby arugula and topped with a balsamic vinegarette. PERFECTION. My sister ordered the entree of duck encrusted with pistachios, laying on a heap of garlic mashed potatoes. Foie gras and baked apricots accompanied her dinner. She ooed and ahhed with every bite. We couldn't pass up dessert, knowing they made everything from scratch, and asked the waitress what was recommended. She ordered us a cashew tart filled with chocolate mousse, topped with a chocolate wafer and caramelized sugar designs. It was surrounded with a scoop of sorbet and a scoop of ice cream. To top it off, there were caramel drenched cashews scattered about the plate. When I tell you this was heaven, I mean heaven. There are few restaurants I'm this impressed with anymore. I can cook most of the food at home for much cheaper and feel better about it. But Tangerine offered me flavors I cannot obtain in my own kitchen as well as an atmosphere I cannot create. It was a bit on the pricey side, along with two drinks and what I mentioned, the bill was a bit over 63.00. It was so worth it. My sister has reservations for this week and tonight, we try their sister restaurant which offers the flavors of India. ** Tangerine • Mediterranean | Casual to Dressy | $$$ A fabric-draped Casbah that shimmers with a sensual Moroccan-inspired vibe, inventive food and outstanding service. 232 Market St Philadelphia (215) 627-5116 • Reservations Recommended |
