It's true that I did use my home DVD player as the benchmark to determine whether or not a burn was successful. However, I also tried to play each final project in the burner after determining a failure with my home player (this NEC that made the disc to begin with).

My inability to do so succesfully on both devices, and the information I got on the website mentioned in my review, lead me to my conclusion about media compatibility which I must stand by.

I should have mentioned this in my review ... sorry.

In response to DENGNY's review I'd like to say I had a slightly different experience. As to the concerns he mentioned about media his problems may have been with his DVD player and not this burner. I've now burned 3 projects to regular recordable media (DVD+R) that all play just fine on my older Sony DVP NS-315 just fine.

As to lack of included software that just depends on how you buy the drive. If you buy an "OEM" or "bare" drive you will not get any software. I purchased my drive in retail packaging from Consumer Depot (http://www.consumerdepot.com/) for 60 dollars. The package included WinDVD 4, Sonic MyDVD, and limited edition versions of Nero Express and Nero Vision. Not a comprehensive bundle by any means but a good start for doing basic stuff.

Bottom line: With DVD burner prices getting to rock bottom it is likely that anyone getting into burning DVDs will have to spend more on software than hardware to be able to do all they want to do. As long as you know that going in there will be no unpleasant surprises.

Write Speed matters (Reply to this comment)

At first I burnt DVD+R (Memorex & TDK) media with 4X speed. After several attempts, I was able to play the recorded DVD+R on my standalone player, Panasonic RP56. After that i recorded DVD+R media with 2X speed, they were instantly playable on my Panasonic player....Speed matters.
