The best movies of all time: Comedy, Tragedy, and perfection!

Mar 22 '01

The Bottom Line These are the movies that I picked, I hope you agree.

This is a really hard editorial to write. The top 10 movies of all time. Out of every single movie ever made, try to narrow it down to your 10 favorites? If you were asked a random question by someone to name your favorite movies of all time, then I bet you would name at least 15 movies in about 20 seconds. If another person asked you the same question a week later I would bet that you would have a completely different list. It really just depends on the day or what you are thinking about that will determine what you say. Since the phrase “of all time” means every movie that was every made in the history of all movies, every person in the world would have different movies on there particular list. This editorial is a list of my favorite movies, and if you don’t agree with one or more of my choices then go ahead and leave a comment. That is what the comment box is for; so don’t hesitate to use it. Anyway, here we go with the list.

10. Gladiator
Russell Crowe was amazing in this movie. He really made his mark (literally) in this movie. If you have seen the movie Braveheart, then go see Gladiator because I think that Gladiator is a better overall movie then Braveheart. Obviously because that is why Gladiator is here and Braveheart isn’t. Gladiator has amazing fight scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and on top of that it has an amazing storyline with incredible acting and directing.

9. Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park redefined movies. This movie had superb special effects that were amazing for its time, that’s why I say that it redefined movies, because no one had seen anything like this before. Every dinosaur looked completely real, and since the special effects were so incredible it made you feel as if it really were possible to have dinosaurs living with people. I also love this movie because Jeff Goldbloom is an amazing actor, and he does an awesome job in this movie.

8. Saving Private Ryan
Saving Private Ryan is the best war movie of all time. This movie has an incredible cast with huge names like Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. Not to mention one of the best directors of all time, Stephen Spielberg. The opening half hour of this movie, I think, should be marked down in movie history as the most intense thirty minutes of any movie ever. Saving Private Ryan has some gore in it, but not enough to completely gross someone out, just enough to give you the feeling of war. I would say that the great directing in this movie makes it one of the best movies of all time.

7. Sixth Sense
Great movie. This movie has the perfect ending to a great overall movie. The directing was impeccable. The sixth sense was the surprising blockbuster movie of 1999, showing the movie industry that you don’t really need a lot of advertising to make a successful movie. If you have a good movie the best advertisement will be the word of mouth from your audience. This is another movie with excellent acting, and for a movie that could have been full of flaws, amazingly there weren’t any.

6. Die Hard
This is without question (in my mind) the best Bruce Willis film ever. This movie has everything an action movie needs to be a successful film. It has a great villain, actually multiple great villains. Die Hard also has a great storyline, that is easy to follow and the perfect hero. Not only is Bruce Willis the perfect hero because he has great strength, he also has enough brains to get him through the terrorist attack.

5. Austin Powers 2: the spy who shagged me
Hilarious movie. Mike Myers is incredible. Not only did he play the part of the hero in this movie, he was also the villain! Actually he played three parts in the movie! He played Austin, Dr. Evil, and Dr. Evil’s hired spy in the ministry of defense Fat Bastard. If you haven’t seen this movie it is a very funny movie. This movie reigned supreme at the box office for the most grossing comedy of 2000.

4. Se7en
This is maybe the most underrated movie of all time. Just because a movie doesn’t make a huge amount of money at the box office doesn’t necessarily mean it is a bad movie. This is in my opinion the best drama of all time. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman make up the main characters in the movie, and they are very good together. Not to mention big names like Gwenyth Paltrow as Pitt’s wife, and Kevin Spacey as Jon Doe. In my opinion Kevin Spacey was better in this movie then in American Beauty. He may only be in Se7en for a few scenes but on those scenes he is amazing, and those prove to be the critical parts in the movie.

3. Independence Day
Independence Day in my opinion is the best movie with aliens of all time. Yes even better then the famous “alien” movies. The characters are so well developed in this movie, that you are biting your fingernails the whole way through. Another amazing point to this movie is that they introduced one of the main characters an hour into the movie. Will Smith’s character wasn’t even in the movie until the movie was already almost half over! Nonetheless they pulled it off. Bill Pullman also had an amazing performance in this film. Did I also mention that Jeff Goldbloom is in this movie? I don’t know what it is but for some reason I love Jeff Goldbloom, he is a great actor, but maybe he is under appreciated.

2.Dumb and Dumber

Dumb and Dumber is the funniest movie of all time. I have seen it at least twenty times in my life, and every time that I see it I still laugh. There is never a scene in Dumb and Dumber where you won’t laugh. Some parts in the movie are just so stupid that you have to laugh. Jim Carrey is very funny and so is Jeff Danials. These two actors really can get it done when they work together. I would love to see a sequel to Dumb and Dumber with both of them in it. This movie proves that if a movie is truly funny then people will go see it.

1. The Matrix
I bet you were probably expecting the Matrix to be on this list somewhere. Maybe not at number one but at least on here. This is my number one favorite movie of all time. It has everything in it. Great acting, insurmountable special effects, and a very different storyline that makes you question your very existence. The Matrix also introduced the best special effects in a movie to date. No movie is yet to beat the awesome special effects in the Matrix. The acting was great, and so was the directing, making the Matrix the number one movie of all time.
