| marf999's Full Review: Sony Vaio PCV-RZ32G P4-2.6GHz/512/80/DVD+/-RW/CDRW... |
The problem with sony vaio computers, is Sony. The company make good TVs, but that's the only product line that's any good. I had a Sony Vaio computer, they are all of similar design.
The power supply fan is ingeniously positioned directly over the CPU blowing hot air over it.
The hard drive is held vertically, not all hard drives are designed to run vertically, some will die earlier. So beware when changing hard drive.
As soon as you open it, Sony will give no support whatsoever. The sony customer support man said "Don't open it,we put traps in there, if you open it then we'll know about it..." presumably the traps are stickers. And yes, it did sound more like a threat than support!
Here's the worst bit. I went to the sony support website www.vaio-link.com probably around april 2003, and didn't have any drivers for Windows 98. I phoned sony, and they didn't just said Windows 98 is not supported. They actually said This machine will not run Windows 98. Which means that finding the drivers is such a nightmare that in practice, you won't be able to run Windows 98. Now if they continue this trend, taking ages over producing drivers, then Vaio customers are in trouble. It's reasonable to expect any computer to be able to run Windows 98 easily, yet the Sony Vaio won't perform that basic function.
No doubt people will be saying the same thing when the next OS comes out. And of course it's an expensive product.
Oh, and the graphics card that the computer came with was totally unreasonable too. If you look at the average monitor cable, you'll find that there's always 1 or 2 pins missing. I plugged my monitor (which works on all my other computers) into the Sony Vaio, and it didn't work. Then I went to the office, and plugged 7 different monitors into the darn thing, and none of them worked. Then I contacted my friend who had a sony monitor, I collected that from him, plugged that in, and it didn't work either. I could only find 1 monitor I had that worked with it, an old 14" monitor. All my monitors work with any computer, but not the Sony Vaio.
Sony Vaio computers are a nightmare and I would avoid them like the plague.
I did once read a review from a guy that bought a Sony Vaio laptop, he said they corrupted the BIOS to only run XP.
