Pros:very inexpensive, peace of mind, cool colors
Cons:hard to hear the other person at times, only has 1 mile range
The Bottom Line: I would never consider not purchasing these radios. They made such a huge difference in my peace of mind and ease on the road.
As my husband and I made our plans to move to FL we checked out all different options on how to get his truck and my car there. I called Uhaul and asked about all the different options...towing my car behind his truck, renting a truck and towing my car, anything but me driving all that distance! We finally decided the cheapest and easiest way to do this was for me, myself, and I to drive my car ALONE for 1200 miles. I can tell you I was beside myself with panic! I am a good driver, however nervous at times, but 20 hours worth (10 and 10) was a bit over my usual trip to the grocery. I would be following my husband's truck, but you never know when someone will cut in front of you or a traffic jam will put you back a bit.
For Christmas we bought the grandkids Barbie walkie talkies and I thought if they can talk around the house, why can't we talk from vehicle to vehicle? We heard through the grapevine that Radio Shack had some radios for $19.99 a piece. This was extremely cheap and I must say I was worried about paying so little for something so important to me. Even after we purchased I was thinking about taking them back and getting something more expensive. I'm glad I didn't.
We took the trip to Radio Shack and purchased the 2-Channel
Personal Radios, #21-1828. They feature a retractable antenna, a very compact design that clips right on the seatbelt for easy access, 100mw power, and up to 1 mile range. They come in three colors, cherry, lime, and grape, the latter being our choice. They also have a call button which rings the other radio to get your partner's attention and a Mon button to check everything happening on a channel.
We had a very good channel with virtually no interference during our trip. Only having two channels was a drawback when purchasing, but worked out well for us. I need to say that in order to change a channel you must remove the battery compartment cover and use a pointed object to slide the switch to the other channel. We did need to change channels before we left because while trying them out at home we had a lot of interference on the one channel.
This particular brand you can not get wet. At times it is hard to hear the other person without putting the radio right up to your ear. For the price we paid for these radios, I feel we got a great deal.
I must also add that during our trip I was directly behind my husband's truck the entire trip. I don't know how well they would have worked had we been separated, although they never faded out. I feel we got better quality out of these radios than I thought we would for the price.
All in all this particular set of radios worked out perfectly for our use. This is the only time we've used them, so I am not sure how well they will do at amusement parks and such. We are planning to take them with us when
we go to Disney so I will find out soon enough!
