Hot, Sticky Sweet Rock Courtesy Of Def Leppard
by lambchops | Sep 22 '03
Pros: Well-produced rock represented the cream of the 1980's crop...
Cons: Strange sequencing and bad "new" song...

Only one song from High 'n' Dry? That's really a shame, as IMNSHO High 'n' Dry is their best album, closely followed by Pyromania. Hysteria was pretty good as well (I saw that someone else mentioned Gods of War and Don't Shoot Shotgun -- two of my favorites from that album), but then they started that horrid slide into being strictly a radio friendly pop-hair-rock band.

As much as I am sometimes shamed to admit it, I used to be a big fan (saw them on the Hysteria tour, when none other than Tesla opened up for them). Their sound hasn't aged well overall, but some of the older stuff has a little more "classic hard rock" sound to it, and probably fares the best.

I've heard only a little of the newest stuff from the last couple albums, but it was almost universally bad. I'd avoid it if you want to continue to enjoy this band as your own little guilty pleasure. :)

I so very much agree. Def Leppard was a hits machine and yes definitely there are some missing things here. Maybe some day a "best of" will be released. In any case it is a shame that, as you said, music seems lazy in some ways today. Even a generic rock band made sure their songs sounded good even if the lyrics were bad and their persona was laughable (not in the case of Def Leppard--they just RAWKED!).

Thanks much for the comment.
Shelly.

Excellent review. I suppose i'm rarely a good market for a Greatest Hits - i mean, am i going to pretend to be surprised that this collection overlooked "Gods of War" and "Don't Shoot Shotgun", the peak of their production-geek tendencies? Course not. But they _were_ mostly a hits band, a very fine one. I miss an era where trying to make even the most generic pop songs sound awesome was just accepted behavior.

I've had this CD for about 2 years now. I rediscovered Def Leppard around then after talking with a friend. I had forgotten how many of their songs I had liked from the 80s. I have several of their CDs now - including X. :)

My favorite Def Leppard album was Hysteria. I love almost every song in that album. (I still have and listen to the tape I bought back in 1988!). Def Leppard was one of my most favorite rock groups (among U2 and Scorpion) back in the late 80's (this makes me feel so old!@#!!). Their concert was awesome!

When the Vault came out, I bought it immediately. Not surprisingly, many of my favorite songs from Hysteria album are here, along with other new songs that I don't have.

Great review!!!

i too got into the DL craze with Hysteria and i think the infatuation had ended by the beginning of the 90s. . . though i think i liked the album covers back then as much as i liked the songs . . . my fave DL song's been Gods of War but when i heard Love Bites from this collection when i was with one of my brothers in the late 90s, i grabbed this one.

Thanks for writing about it Shelly! ...t-žoo

Maybe, just maybe. Hysteria was released in my 5th or 6th grade year...but I liked music back then :)

Thanks for the comment as usual Oleg.

Could I too be considered a child of the 80s? I wasn't really listening to music back then (5-6 years old, heh), but that's where my preferences are.. including DL.

Great job :))

yay! thanks for reviewing one of my "guilty secret" bands, Shelly! I agree with you on the inclusion of the new song - that's the only way they were going to sell that song, by adding it to a collection of hits. and that wonderful production sound is courtesy of superpopproducer Mutt Lange - the man behind the chorused backing vocals, and impossibly catchy hooks. He certainly knows how to crank out a hit...
