Ever struggled with the perfect gift to give
a friend or co-worker as they enter a new phase
in their life? Retirement, new job, graduation and
trips overseas all present gift giving opportunities
and challenges. I recommend giving a Dr. Suess
book. "To adults? You must be nuts!", I can hear
you mumbling as you read this. Truth be told, I
may be nuts, but in this case, my recommendation is
sound. The Dr. Suess classic, "Oh, the Places You'll
Go!" is easily Dr. Suess' best work and wholly
appropriate for adults.
Many people making a change are given loads of fine
advice gained from books like "What Color is Your
Parachute". Your friends and acquaintances may be ready
for some lighthearted encouragement as they take the
plunge. If they're not fond of talk-show sponsored pep
talks or the self help section at the bookstore, give
them "Oh, the Places You'll Go!"
Several times, as co-workers left for greener grass,
this was my gift of choice. I would pass the book
around for all who knew our soon-to-be departed to sign.
Signers would browse through the whimsical pages, looking
for the perfect page to place their mark. Many would
follow the curving streets with their prose, adding
their wisdom to the good Doctor's.
But how could Dr. Suess's advice be improved upon?
What better words were written than, "to be dexterous
and deft. And NEVER mix up your right foot with your
left"? Perfect for those pursuing a new dance career.
Or how about, "You can get all hung up in a prickle-ly
perch. And your gang will fly on. You'll be left in a
Lurch." for those cutting blackberry vines over their
summer vacation? Or these words, made to order for those
entering flight school, "You'll be on your way up! You'll
be seeing great sights! You'll join the high fliers who
soar to high heights."
I've obviously taken a light approach to this review
but I actually believe that this book has great advice
for living life. The book has a section on "the Waiting
Place" where you sometimes idle for a while before
soaring. How many of us wished we had known about the
Waiting Place before arriving there? If Dr. Phil's
messages on Oprah are too hard on your ears, try "Oh, the
Places You'll Go!" I think almost any reader can learn
something from it.
