Keep Spinning the Web of Trust

The Bottom Line Trust those who give you a reason and that reason isn't simply adding you to their list first.

I have put off writing on this topic until I felt comfortable enough to give some decent advise. I've been here about 4 months, and I am still learning each time I log on to Epinions. I do spend a lot of time on this site, but I read more than I write. I learn by reading others epinions, advise and general comments left to others.

As for my WOT, I am slowly building it. The reason I say slowly is because I can't put someone on my web of trust that I don't know. How can I trust you or your work if I don't know you? However if someone does place me on their WOT that I am not familiar with, I will take some time to read their epinions. Possibly not all as I don't have enough time to do all here that I would like to do, but usually I can make a decision after reading 5 or 6 articles in different catagories.

For the people that are on my WOT, I simply can't read everything each one writes on a daily basis. That doesn't mean that I don't trust your work, what it does mean that as a busy wife and mother, I have another life outside of epinions that has to come first. Sometimes I try to catch up late at night after the family is asleep, or on weekends when everyone is off doing their own thing and I have some me time.

I don't really believe in the MLM [multi level marketing] system for epinions. What I mean by that is by building up a huge list of trusts the more hits you receive. Yes, that is true to a certain extent, but that is not what I base my criteria on to add someone to my list. For example I came on the other day to find I had a new person who trusted me. I'm human and that is always a good feeling to feel trusted, so I went to their bio and wanted to read some of their work only to find they had just joined that very day, and had written one rather non informative epinion. I'm sorry I didn't even bother to rate it.

What it takes to make it to my WOT

I like to read your work at the minimum 5-6 articles in various areas of interest. I can't trust someone who writes everything in Automotives, or how to breastfeed as while the articles may have quality writing, these are areas I have no knowledge or interest in.

I like to see details. I mean I want to realize that you know something about what you are writing about. I usually can feel that in the way a person writes about a particular product or advise. For example if you write on the game twister and tell me it has a pretty colorful mat... yes indeed it does, but what does that tell me about the game?

I like humor, but there is a limit. I'll never mention another authors name here in a bad way, but I did see a review tonight that was written in a humorous way or may I be so bold to say an attempt at humor, but it was difficult to read and understand.

Don't use vulgarity. I have been put down for stating this feeling before, but it's my personal feeling and I don't ok NO I won't read an article full of profanity.

You can become friends with members of your WOT, as I have several of mine. And I don't always get VH ratings from people on my web of trust, nor do I expect to. I highly respect when a member of my WOT gives me a lower rating because I know that person read my work and there is a reason for their rating. I will a lot of times go back to my epinion and find what I did wrong and edit it. That is what makes trust by trusting someone to give and accept constructive criticism.

Your WOT on Epinions is a very important tool for you to use, to learn by, and to benefit by, but only if used honestly and consistantly.
